In 768 the Franks' greatest ruler Charles the Great or Charlemagne rose to power.

He expanded the Kingdom to be a well-run western European empire.

He promoted the codification of laws and increased education. He also promoted the authority of the Church.

The 1,000 years after 476 is a period of time called the Middle Ages. It is also known as the Medieval period or the Dark Ages.

Some Knights devotion to the Church saw them become vassals for pope.

Military religious organisations were formed. A famous one was the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Soloman, or the Knights Templar.

They would be heavily involved in the Crusades as the Church sought to retrieve Jerusalem from the Muslims.

In this time there was no great empire ruled by a centralised government like in Roman times. Europe broke up into many smaller Kingdoms.

Education became less important at this time and in Europe many of Greece and Rome's great artistic, architectural, scientific, political and literary achievements were forgotten.

Medieval Europe

As Rome waned the Franks, led by Clovis, expanded their territory from the Rhine to the Pyranees, including Roman Gaul.

Clovis conversion to Christianity confirmed the prominence of the Christian church in Europe.

Medieval Knights lived by a code of honour known as chivalry.

They had to defend the Church, women and the weak.

They had to fight injustice and show courage in every battle.

Reduced foreign trade saw cities get smaller. Many people returned to the countryside to live as farmer serfs.
