In the case of The Runner, the social group we are mainly portraying in the movie is young people from urban city backgrounds.
In this question I'm looking at how our media product represents a particular social group. Before going into detail of answering this, I thought it would be important to define what these are and the relevance of them.
We wanted to use young people to create the same effect they create in Brotherhood. The nature of the activities they undertake creates a dramatic nature to the film, making it more gripping to watch. This is why we had our actors run into the block and shot all our scenes in urban areas, and they were wearing dark clothing and tracksuits. It could be argued though this shows them in a bad light and even supports stereotypes people may have of young people from urban areas. However, we still wanted to represent them in this way for the film as our target audience is young people and we feel this will relate to them.
One movie we often refer to is Brotherhood because of its similarities in genre. In this movie young people are presented violent, destructive and dangerous. This is done to add to the dramatic nature of the movie. One review I read highlighted the significance the directer (Noel Clarke) intended of this:
