Total War

To what extent is a war a total war?

The Main Attributes of Total War

  • Total
  • War
  • In
  • WWII

Human Involvement

The Holocaust

Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler used concentration camps to get rid of political opponents and to murder over 6 million Jews, homosexuals, handicapped and gypsies.

Stalin's Massacring

Josef Stalin, because he was born with a slight cripple, took revenge on tens of millions of ordinary citizens. His "purges" involved death camps and mass genocide.

Civilians Killed

Strategic bombing in WWII involved the bombing of oil fields, cities, manufacturing plants, ports, ralways, and military groups.

Industry

War Production

Goods were produced strictly for the war effort. Metal and other resources were scarce, and were recycled, salvaged, and used to make new weaponry and war equipment.

Women in the Workforce

Women joined the workforce because of the shortage of men (men were on the battlefront) and the cry for help in factories and other working environments.

Military

Aerial Bombardment

Aerial Bombardment was the tactic used against civilians to take them out, and to take out plants that produced essential materials like oil, weapons and the like.

No Mercy!

No mercy was shown in the war. Brutal war carried around the world. Japanese Kamikaze showed this well, giving their lives to the emperor to benefit their effort in the Pacific.

Natural

Resources Taken Out

The war affected nature in many ways. The hundreds of Atomic bombs that were tested left radiation in the ocean, killed many animals and still affects ocean life today. Trees, forests, fields were ruined by aerial bombardment as well.

Agriculture

...........

Victory Gardens

Victory gardens were grown so that people wouldn't have to buy as many goods at the local grocer, but could be more dependent on themselves, allowing industry to focus on war goods and sending food to the troops.

Technological

Nuclear Bombs

Air Warfare

Technology grew greatly because of the war. Also, countries used every effort of the new technology to take out the enemy. Germany built many jets. The U.S. used A-bombs to end the war with Japan.
