Цель:
Познакомить учащихся с жанром английского юмористического фольклора - лимериками и научить отличать их от других стихотворных форм.
Задачи:
1 Развитие умения аудирования и чтения
2. Развивать умения и навыки сравнения, анализа структуры стихотворной формы
3. Развитие навыков литературного перевода аутентичных текстов
4. Развитие творческих способностей учащихся
5. Развитие интереса к культуре Великобритании
6. Повышение мотивации учащихся
Origin and History
Limerick
The name comes from a group of poets who
wrote in Limerick, Ireland in the 18th century.
A party game in which each guest in turn made up a nonsense verse and all sang a refrain with the line "Will you come up to Limereck?"
The name derives from the chorus of an 18th-century Irish soldiers' song "Will you come up to Limerick?"
What Is a Limerick?
A limerick is a kind of a witty, humorous or nonsense five-line poem.
A limerick usually begins with “There was a …”.

Edward Lear
(12 May 1812- 29 January 1888)
Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet, famous for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks.
Adward Lear wrote a poem "How Pleasant to Know Mr Lear!"
It's a humorous self-portrait in verse form.

Who has written such volumes of stuff!
Some think him ill-tempered and queer,
But a few think him pleasant enough.
His mind is concrete and fastidious,
His nose is remarkably big;
His visage is more or less hideous,
His beard it resembles a wig.
He has ears, and two eyes, and ten fingers,
Leastways if you reckon two thumbs;
Long ago he was one of the singers,
But now he is one of the dumbs.
He sits in a beautiful parlour,
With hundreds of books on the wall;
He drinks a great deal of Marsala,
But never gets tipsy at all.
He has many friends, lay men and clerical,
Old Foss is the name of his cat;
His body is perfectly spherical,
He weareth a runcible hat.
When he walks in waterproof white,
The children run after him so!
Calling out, "He's gone out in his night-
Gown, that crazy old Englishman, oh!"
He weeps by the side of the ocean,
He weeps on the top of the hill;
He purchases pancakes and lotion,
And chocolate shrimps from the mill.
He reads, but he cannot speak, Spanish,
He cannot abide ginger beer:
Ere the days of his pilgrimage vanish,
How pleasant to know Mr. Lear!

По-испански не пишет он, дети,
И не любит он пить рыбий жир...
Как приятно нам знать, что на свете
Есть такой человек – мистер Лир!
The limerick form was popularized by Edward Lear in his first "Book of Nonsense "(1845).
Lear wrote 212 limericks. He made very amusing nonsense drawings to accompany them.
There was a Young Lady whose chin,
Resembled the point of a pin;
So she had it made sharp,
And purchased a harp,
And played several tunes with her chin.
