Foreshorting is a way of portraying three dimensions on a flat, two dimensional surface by suggesting depth or distance.

Definition of Foreshortening

  • Find an interesting location.
  • Take in interesting photograph, use forshortening!
  • Consider layout, and lighting.
  • Interesting highlights, and shadows.

Activity

In front of you is a pen.

  • First, I would like you to observe the pen whilst rotating and moving the pen, look at how the length and width differs depending on the angle of the pen.
  • Second, I would like you to draw the pen in a foreshortened angle, using one point perspective technique.
  • Third, add shading and shadows to assist with creating a three dimensional observation.
