What is poetry?

Poetry is a type of literature where thoughts and feelings are expressed in compact and imaginative ways.

What is the difference

between poetry and

prose?

Unlike most other writers, poets specifically arrange words in ways that touch the reader’s emotions and senses.

Poets more than any other writer use figurative language to create these memorable and touching descriptions.

What are the three R's of poetry?

The three R's of poetry are almost always found in poetry and not in other types of writing.

To review:

Rhyme is repetition of similar sounds

either within a line of poetry or at the

end of lines of poetry.

FUN FACT

Famous poet, William Shakespeare, developed several rhyme schemes that are still used to create poetry today.

Rhythm is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. It is the beat of the poem.

FUN FACT

Poet, Maya Angelou, often uses precise rhythms in her poetry to bring the words to life.

Repetition is the use of a word or phrase over and over again in a poem.

Repetition is used to emphasize an important point.

FUN FACT

Poet, Langston Hughes, often used repetition or a refrain to point out important ideas in his poetry.

How are poems organized?

Poems are organized into lines and stanzas.

A line is like a sentence and a stanza is like a paragraph.

Pablo Neruda is a poet famous for breaking up lines and stanzas in unique ways.

What is symbolism?

Symbolism is when a poet uses a person, place, or object to stand for something beyond itself.

A symbol means more than what it actually is.

For example, a flag is

more than just a piece of

cloth. A flag symbolizes a

country, its history, and its

people.

FUN FACT

Chinese poet, Li Po, used symbolism

throughout his poetry to bring his

ideas to life.

What is imagery?

Imagery consists of words or phrases that appeal to the reader’s five senses.

Writers use sensory details to help readers imagine how something might look, sound, smell, feel, or taste.

FUN FACT

Poets like Emily Dickinson

and Nikki Giovanni

used/use imagery to create vivid pictures in their reader's mind.

Using imagery helped/helps to improve Giovanni's and Dickinson's poetry.
