Analysis Of Trailer
Woman in Black is a horror film that is set in the Edwardian Era, you can already see this by the use of costumes that the characters wear, along with the use of horse and carriage as transport at the beginning. Its unique selling point is the choice of actor in the film, Daniel Radcliffe who plays the lead role, attracting more females and fans of Harry Potter. This had an effect on how many people would want to watch this film in the cinema, as people can relate more easily to memborable faces in the media.
We can see through an establishing shot the genre of this film as the old fashioned mansion is secluded by a surrounding forest. This gives the audience a higher sense of awareness and anticipation as to why the house is becoming inhabited by the main character.
The pace of the trailer is slow to start off with to give the audience a chance to understand what the film contains, before it begins to flash images of the film at a faster pace. This helps to intrigue the audience as it keeps them engaged as it doesn't show the woman in black, the audience are more intrigued to find out more about her. Why is the film named after her?
A woman appears in the window screaming at the very end of the trailer, this is a special effect as you see Danielle Radcliffe in the reflection first, reaching his hand to the window. This is when she appears, after a flash of light. Using this at the very end of the trailer allows the audience to question who she is and whether she is the woman in black or a victim. Leaving a question will therefore make more people want to see it in cinema's.
The Genre of this film is a comedy horror, and the plot of the film is to be a spin off of the Scream, the original horror film from 1996. From the trailer we can see the genre due to the interactions between the killer in the mask and the teenagers. As opposed to the origional film it is less scary because of the mix of comedy which makes it more adaptable to watch for a wider audience.
The narrative of the trailer immediately shows the audience a classic cliche of some horrors as the blonde girl answers the phone to the killer. The camera pans with her until we see the killer standing in the window. Again, this shows a stereotypical horror film, knowing danger before the character does. The voice over is used throughout the trailer, giving the audience the sense that it is an ordinary horror film. However this reinforces the aspect of a comedy because it is overused, making it appear funny instead of adding atmosphere. This is effective for the audience as it changes the mood they are supposed to be feeling. Narrative is also what is used to change the audiences views of what the narrative is going to be, using the phrase 'You were right' as an answer to his speech 'You thought the terror was over...' This is effective because it engages the audience.
It then shows the blonde character running away from the killer, adding suspense for the audience as they anticipate whether she will be caught or not. However, the atmosphere becomes funny due to her actions running through the sprinklers, making the audience laugh as she is meant to be feeling scared.
The use of credits and inter titles are used in the trailer to break up the action into different tips on what not to do.
The target audience for this film is for ages 15, although it contains comedy it stills has elements of horror and death.
In the trailer you can see that the film is aimed more at males due to their being more female leads and examples of comedy such as the sprinkler clip, which would attract males more to watch the film.
