Who do you think is the intended audience for the poster? I think the intended audience for the poster is mainly females and families. But also for anyone who loves a good comedy!
What are the main colors used in the poster? What do they connote?
Purple is one of the main colours used in the background, being placed on the mother Tess's side, purple represents wisdom, power and energy which could represent the qualities of the mother. But also light purple represents a more feminine design and fun which could suggest the movie is more aimed to females and families.
Green is another main colour used in the background this could be because it is a complementary colour to purple. But also green represents growth, freshness which could connote new and lack of experience. Green also connotes ambition, these being the qualities the teenager has and that she is not ready to be her mother as she has a lack of experience on parenting and working life.
For the tagline the colour used is black which could represent the ideas of mystery and gives the typography strength to stand out from the bright colours. On the lettering 'Freaky' it has a outerglow of red, red connotates energy and courage, which also gives emphasis on the word freaky suggesting the film will be entertaining and funny.
Are the messages in the poster primarily visual, verbal, or both?
I think the poster displays both because the image displays the unusual change/body swap and shows the audience the main characters and the actresses playing them. But also there is plenty of information such as the title and tagline which indicates some ideas of what the plot entails
Film Title
The film title 'Freaky Friday' is short and gets to the point suggesting that Friday was the day something weird happened but it doesnt reveal what happened making the audience want to see the film. The title is in bold lettering this emphasizes the importance of the title as they want the audience to remember it and buy it at a later date. But also the title is in capital letters and Bold font which makes it more legible to read. Which will meet its target market of mainly families. The colour of the font is white which symbolises perfection and coolness which are positive connotations adding to the films feel good fun factor.
'Every teenager's nightmare...turning into her mother.' The tagline gives a humourous effect as the film is meant to be a comedy and this is what most teenagers feel at some point. But it gives a humourous add becuase as most people wont even mean it and just say it when there angry but for the characters its real and happening. Therefore it looks from the younger persons point of view, as all teenagers like to have fun, be with friends and not have to worry about the things grown ups have to face. But also everyone wants to be there own person not someone else. So the expression suggests that teenagers and parents have there arguments and wish not to be like them but who they want to be. But in most cases the child will have some qualities and flaws of there parents.
In terms of costume there is a huge contrast of what the audience would expect them to wear. For example Lohan is the younger of the two actresses but she is dressed like an adult this signifies the twist what the audience will see in the movie. On the other hand Curtis is in the outfit the audience would assume a stereotypical teenager would wear this showsthe difference the character has to go through and indicates the plot of the storyline.
Costume for Lindsay Lohan. Lohan is representing how her 'mother would dress' in the clothing of a working adult. This is indicated with the briefcase bag and navy suit to give her the professional stereotypical work look. The clothing also looks like she is ready for business. But also the use of pearls gives her a more sophisticated look which suggests older women like to make sure they are well dressed. The genre is comedy so Lohan on the poster dressed like her on screen mother displays how she doesnt belong in her mothers shoes as she is only young. But the comedy side of it is that the audience can look forward to how lohan can adapt to the role and the obstacles she has to overcome to go back in her own body.
Costume for Jamie Lee Curtis. Curtis plays the role of Tess, on the poster she is dressed how her on screen daughter would dress. Her daughter is in a band so the prop of the guitar represents a teenagers interest. But Curtis' body language of her hands not on the guitar but straight down suggests that she doesnt have a clue about how to play the instrument. Her costume consists of a denim jacket, tartan skirt and black boots which represents a stereotypical teenager giving the message teenagers are rebellious and like to be different.
But Curtis' costume compared to Lohan's symbolises the 'different worlds' they come from and that they were the complete opposite of eachother and to change they sacriface who they were.
Image and illustration
The image is very simple, the two characters standing next to eachother shocked with the transformation, but also in eachothers clothes. I like this idea because it will make the audience who see the poster look twice to see if there actually seeing correctly but also give them mixed messages of what they think will happen in the plot. The shot size taken was a long shot, so the audience can see the actresses whole bodies and acknowledge that something is not right and different, this is a brilliant idea so they can get straight accross to the audience the massive change the characters have gone through. But also the long shot lets the audience see the characters facial expressions aswell. With the use of the background which is two isolated block colours could give the image an overall closed frame, this decision could of been used to represent the idea of the characters being trapped this displays how they will be feeling. The use of colour in the background are striking and will be attractive to the eye. But also gives the poster are more fun and outrageous look which people look for in a comedy.
The characters body language, displays there shock and cant believe whats happened to them. But also the audience will be attracted to see why they look like this and find out the whole story. But they are also stood straight arms and legs apart to suggest that they are uncomfortable with what they are wearing. The audience will look at the poster and instantly think why are they dressed oppositely and have dominant ideas of how the characters should dress. But the poster can also give mixed messages of what the overall plot is about for example the audience could assume that Lohan is a teenager with a mother who's determined to still be young and one of the children. And that the teenager tends to have to look after herself.
Institutional information.
The insitutional information provided is the film maker Walt Disney and the actors names this will promote these subjects but also it will help promote the film with well known names and icons supporting the making of it.
Are "expert witnesses" (ie critics) quoted? However there is no expert witnesses quotes on the poster this could be because the poster is only a teaser poster which wont reveal what other people think but also dont reveal much about the plot.
A generic convention is what the audience
expects to see, Character types is an example
of this. The theory character types came from
Vladimir Propp who discussed that every film would
have at least one of these character types.
-Hero
-Villain
-Heroine
-Helper
-Donor
-Mentor
On the film poster we see the theory in motion, as
it displays the two heroines of the story, they would
be classed as this character type because heros save people
so the pair will be saving eachother from whats happened. The
role of a hero/heroine in greek mythology is to overcome obstacles,
so this backs up my point as the characters are overcoming situations
they have to face to re-establish harmony (being themselves again)
But in that sense they would be seen as helpers too, helping eachother
cope with the transformation and to get back to the way it used to be.
Director and star info
The directors name is in the institutional
info rather than directly on the poster.
This could be because they want the actors
to take credit for creating the atmosphere
and excitement of the film. However the stars
names have been placed on the poster but the
wrong actresses image placed underneath to go
with the theme of body change. This could be an interesting idea to construct on my poster flat plans as it will give ideas to the audience of the theme I'm trying to convey.
The stars information could of been used as part of the
poster as a USP. To show not only which big stars
are in the movie but they are also well known loved
actresses. So this could encourage more people to
watch the film to see there favourite actors work. So therefore on my product I could include the actor/actresses name to devise a unique selling point.
