Our rare materials don't want to end up like this.

You'll be looking at your materials here during your research visit.

Then you'll be assigned to a table and given your first box or book!

When you arrive for your research visit, ask for a lock at the reading room desk.

OK to bring into the reading room:

  • Laptop without protective sleeve
  • Loose paper or notebooks without pockets

We'll give you one box or book at a time.

  • Digital camera (turn off the flash, please!)
  • Pencils (pens=marks on rare documents that can't be erased!)

You'll place most of your stuff in a locker outside the reading room.

  • Cell phone, USB drives, charging cords

Forgot something? We have pencils, paper, loaner cameras, and a self-service overhead scanner (no charge!) in the reading room.

Arrange everything on your table so that the librarians at the desk have an unobstructed view of the materials you're working with.

For manuscripts collections:

  • Remove one folder from the box at a time.
  • Mark the folder's place with a placemarker, so that you can return it to its proper order.
  • Keep pages tidy and in order.
  • When returning folders to the box, make sure the papers aren't hanging out of the top or sides of the folder.

Handle materials carefully so they don't

get damaged.

Box with placemarker.

Ask us if you need help with this!

We'll give you book rests to use with books or other bound items.

When you're finished with your box or book, bring it back to the reference desk.

After you've looked at your last item and are ready to leave the reading room,

stop by the desk.

Thanks for watching!

E-mail special.collections@duke.edu with questions or suggestions about this video.

We'll trade it for the next item on

your list of materials.

We'll need to check your laptop and any of the other materials you brought into the reading room with you.
