Early Life
- Took apprenticeship as shoemaker
- Too demanding- quit
- Tried cabinet making- unsuccessful
- Age 13- seven year apprenticeship as writer and editor of Newburyport Herald
- Age 20- purchased Newburyport Essex Courant and renamed it to Newburyport Free Press
- Due to Federalist viewpoint, his paper failed (6 months)
- 1805- Born in Massachusetts
- 1808- Father left family = poverty
- Forced to sell homemade molasses and candy to make money
