  • Age 25- joined Abolition movement
  • American Colonization Society
  • Thought it promoted freedom of blacks but just wanted to preserve slavery
  • Left and went to antislavery paper: The Genius of Universal Emancipation
  • 1831- Published first issue of his newspaper: The Liberator
  • Advocate of emancipation of all slaves= unpopular opinion
  • "Most radical of abolitionists"
  • Helped organized New England Anti-Slavery Society and American Anti-Slavery Society
  • First organizations for immediate emancipation

Early Life

  • Took apprenticeship as shoemaker
  • Too demanding- quit
  • Tried cabinet making- unsuccessful
  • Age 13- seven year apprenticeship as writer and editor of Newburyport Herald
  • Age 20- purchased Newburyport Essex Courant and renamed it to Newburyport Free Press
  • Due to Federalist viewpoint, his paper failed (6 months)
  • 1805- Born in Massachusetts
  • 1808- Father left family = poverty
  • Forced to sell homemade molasses and candy to make money
