Prometheus has landed.

MARKETING

The marketing for Prometheus used TV spots, trailers, posters in magazines and bus stations as well as clips in the cinema. One of the most effective forms of marketing was the viral marketing that featured a Weyland TED talk, mini clips of Elizabeth Shaw and David the Android.

These videos were posted on blogs and fan sites to generate talk about the upcoming release. By posting them online it allowed the fans to share them on social networking sites for everyone to see. This is also cost effective as Fox only had to make the clips and then the world posted them and spread the word for them.

Prometheus also had a website for the film that all of the content was displayed on, as well as news of the film that was released in the weeks and months before the film was released. This ensured people kept going back to visit the website to retain their interest in the film and remember about it's release.

AUDIENCE

There were also different types of trailers shown on TV and in the Cinema before other films. A teaser trailer was released before the main trailers and this generated a buzz and excitement for the film. When the trailer was shown on TV viewers were encouraged to tweet using the Hashtag #areyouseeingthis to tell everyone about the advert. Another advert was shown later on that night that displayed positive opinions on the trailer.

There was a debate about how much to cut in order to make the R rated film a PG-13 without spoiling the event, and in the end Fox decided to keep the film as it was and market it as a 15.

Without the use of the internet and social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, the Prometheus Ad campaign wouldn't have worked as well as their fans wouldn't have been able to generate talk about the films release. By using the

internet to advertise the film, Fox would have spent less money than primarily

advertising on the TV. It was also cost effective as more people found

out about the film from their friends on social networking sites

because of the viral clips internet presence.

I believe this both helped and put the film at a disadvantage, because if the film is targeted at a larger audience, more people will go and see it with their families and enjoy the event with more people. However, i think that making Prometheus a 15 was a good idea, due to the fact they managed to include more of the story and visual effects that enhance the film.

The film gained a 73% approval rating from 260 critics—an average rating of 6.9 out of 10—on the website Rotten Tomatoes and on IMDb it gained a 7.3 out of 10. We can see people enjoyed the film - although they didn't think it was perfect and they didn't enjoy it as much as 20th Century Fox has hoped.

PLOT

This film is set in 2093 and takes place in the same universe as the 'Alien' movies. A group of explorers, including some archaeologists, are on an "undisclosed" mission.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

Filming began at Shepperton Studios and Pinewood Studios in England and Scott also used eight sound stages for filming, including the 007 Stage (James Bond films). Exterior shots of the alien world were shot in Iceland, where filming occurred for two weeks. Filming also took place at Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.

They arrive at a planet millions of miles away from Earth. The team spot what they believe to be signs of civilization. They go to investigate and find more than just signs, they find conclusive evidence. But some of them have an ulterior motive for being there, including the Weyland Corporation. They believe that this is where the human race actually came from. Things soon turn from excitement to survival once inside their discovery.

In September 2011, filming moved to a complex in Alicante in Spain. The complex was booked from August 22, 2011, through to December 10, 2011 and approximately 250 people worked on the three month-long Spain shoot, generating over €1 million in the local economy. Scott avoided using green screens unless necessary, instead he used various items so the actors would know where they should be looking in any particular scene on the practical sets where CGI elements would be inserted in post-production. Noomi Repace said green screens were used less than six times during filming and 3D cameras set on camera dollies and tripods, which were continuously in use during filming.

By using these landscapes and places as settings for the film, the directors managed to create a science fiction planet for 'Prometheus' to take place on. By using real locations, it added depth to the film so it looked real and less CGI. This improved the way viewers see the film, as one thing most people say about the film is the special effects are good. This proves that by using real locations instead of CGI ensures the cinematic experience is improved because the audience prefer something that looks more realistic.

Additional scenes were also filmed in the Isle of Skye in Scotland, as well as a scene in the Scottish mountains.

MEDIA OWNERSHIP

Fans of the alien series were excited to hear that Ridley Scott was directing another film that was a prequel to the series and because of the previous success Ridley Scott had, 20th Century Fox knew that this film would be a big hit and one of the most highly anticipated films of 2012.

HOME MEDIA

20th Century Fox is well known and is one of the big six distributors in the global film industry and the success of this film could have been also measured based on the success of every other film they have distributed.

The budget for the film was $130 million and the audience knew this big budget Sci-Fi movie would be a hit.

On September 7, 2012, Fox announced that Prometheus would be the launch title of its new digital distribution initiative "Digital HD". The film will be released on September 18, 2012, three weeks prior to its DVD, Blu-ray disc and Video on demand (VOD) release, for downloading and streaming through platforms including Amazon, iTunes, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in over 50 countries.

Even though Prometheus only took $402.48 million at the box office, it is the number 11 highest grossing film of 2012.

3D TECHNOLOGY

The film was released on October 9, 2012 and was the number 1 selling film on DVD and Blu-ray Disc during the first week of it being released. The Blu-ray disc edition of the film was released in a 2-disc set and a 4-disc "Collector's Edition". Both versions contain the theatrical cut of Prometheus, commentary by Scott, Lindelof and Spaihts, a DVD and digital copy of the film, alternate and deleted scenes, plus other features. The Collector's Edition also contains the 3D version of the film and approximately 7 hours of features including a documentary on the film's production.

In July 2011, it was said that the film would rely upon practical effects, and would use CGI generally for on-set pre-visualization of external space visuals. Ridley Scott said that, "you can pretty much do anything you want with digital technology". 3D company 3ality Technica provided some of the rigs and equipment to facilitate 3D filming, and trained the film's crew in their proper operation. According to Scott, the decision to film in 3D added $10 million to the film's budget. Since 3D films need high lighting levels on set, the hallmark dark and shadowy atmosphere of the Alien films was added in post-production using grading processes, and the 3D equipment was based on post-Avatar technology.

Both the production of the film and the companies involved benefited from the use of 3D technology as it added to the audience participation of the film and made it realistic when viewing. The audience would have also paid more to see the film in 3D which would have added to the amount of profit made, as well as helped with the success of the film. The synergy between Fox and 3ality Technica meant that the film production was easier to complete as specialist 3D technology was used to make the film and the crew were taught how to use it to get the best effects overall. This both enhanced the film experience itself and the way the film was produced.

Prometheus is also available to rent on services such as Love Film and Netflix. The introduction of other platforms viewers can watch the film on at home has meant an increase in copies sold. Fans can now download films straight to their Phones or iPod's as services such as iTunes sell digital copies for around the same price as DVD's.

Scott worked on the 3D footage to add depth to the movie and scenes were colour graded in order for the film to work both in 2D and 3D. However, people who wanted to watch the film in 2D were angry about the fact there were limited places to watch it as Fox wanted the 3D picture to be shown in most cinemas.

I think the technology that has been invented over the past years has revolutionized the way people watch films, as they can easily watch them on the go, anywhere and anytime they like. This appeals to film fans as they know they can download films for a reasonable price and still enjoy good quality entertainment. It also increases the profit made as there is more than one way to purchase the film.
