Where technology is integrated into the everyday curriculm and each and every child is able to learn due to the numerous methods that can be integrated into the curriculum.These are some critical parts to one such lesson that utilizes Blooms Taxonomy Higher Order of Thinking (H.O.T.S)

Lesson Details:

  • Lesson title- WWII Homonyms
  • Content area- German Word Study
  • Grade level- 11
  • Curriculum Standards- 12.11.S1.B: Speak and write common vocabulary, phrases and structures during activities with the teacher, classmates and family. (Interpersonal Skills).

(T) Show video about 'Kristallnacht' (5 minutes)

(T) Explain the objectives of the lesson: to better understand key German Vocabulary and its uses in both WWII and in modern day Germany. (2 minutes)

(T) Provide examples and non-examples of a set of vocabulary terms- homonyms. (15 minutes)

(S) Create sentences using the words provided. (5 minutes)

(S) Students share sentences created on the board of smart board. ( 10 minutes)

(T/S) Class discussion about WWII and issues raised with using the set of vocabulary words. When it is and is not acceptable to use the terms. (10 minutes)

(T) Aminister and exit slip (5 minutes)

Lesson Objectives:

  • The students will be able to identify and define German words that originated from the holocaust.
  • The students will make a comparison between examples of vocabulary from the Holocaust and other uses of the word in German language and be able to tell how the words are being used in a sentence.

Anticipatory Set:

Students will watch a 5 minute clip on Kristallnacht, known as the start of the Holocaust in WWII.

  • I will have an in class discussion and provide both examples and non-examples of vocabulary that I will ask the students about.
  • I will have the students create sentences, one for each new vocabulary word, I will view these sentences as I walk around the room.
  • I will have a short quiz on the vocabulary at the end of the lesson.

Learning Activities:

  • These vocabulary terms/homonyms with definition as it pertains to WWII and general German literary definitions (examples and non-examples).
  • 1. Kristallnacht- Night of anti-Jewish attacks, also means 'Crystal Night'.
  • 2. Buchenwald- A concentration camp during WWII, also means 'Beach Grove'.
  • 3. Ghetto- Could mean the poor housing accommodations given to early WWII Jews. Also could mean a general slum.
  • 4. Lager- Concentration camp or could mean journal, bed and other terms.
  • 5. Fuehrer- Can refer to Adolf Hitler, but in general means leader.
