Religion has dated back to ancient times, whether you believe Adam and Eve were the first people, or caveman, people have always looked up to the heavens for answers.
In ancient times (egyptians, greeks, etc.) the main religious beliefs was whatever the ruler told his people. For example in Egypt the pharaohs would enforce there beliefs on the people, claiming they were sent from the gods to rule on the earth. It was similar to the greeks who had a god for every single natural or super natural thing that occurred.
There was a change when Abraham said he found God, and there is only one true God. This was different than the common beliefs at the time that there were multiply gods and each had a different power. If you trace down the line of Abraham you'll find Jesus and he revolutionized religion by claiming he was God on earth, and dying for mankind, which was totally contradicting of the popular belief that man should die for the gods. Also from the other half of the Abraham family you find the prophet Muhammad, who preaches about Allah. This led to many conflicts with the European Christians and the Middle Eastern Muslims during the crusades of the 1300, with many conflicts going on to this day.
Finally we are were we are today. In today society we have a diverse amount of religions, with the major ones being Christianity, Hinduism, Muslims, and Buddhism. Also recently there has been a big increase in atheism, or the lack of belief in a god. This has been because of the increase of science and many people saying there is no definitive proof of a divine presence.
