504

IEP

Individualized Educational Program

504 Plan

Both

  • Comes from Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Comes from Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Parents do not have to pay for either plan.

  • Section 504 is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
  • IEP developed based on procedural requirements of the IDEA

Federal laws mandate both types of plan.

  • Lists all of the accommodations or modifications that the student needs in the classroom.

Child must attend elementary or secondary institution.

  • For students who require specialized instruction to learn

Goal is to ensure child's success in school.

  • More involved plan; several pages long
  • Disabilities may include wide range such as peanut allergies

School staff creates both plans.

  • Simple plan; may be one page

Should get updated annually.

  • Student will likely be in a different classroom part of day or a different school
  • Child may not require a different way of learning and may remain in regular classroom all day

School staff, parent, or doctor can refer child at any time.

  • Key word = SPECIAL SERVICES
  • Key word = ACCOMMODATIONS
