What are social groups?

Social groups are the most basic form of association between people.

They are defined by the interaction between individuals, where there is a sense of belonging and similar characteristics.

Introduction

When we wait for the bus, when we watch a football game, when we do a group work with our classmates, when we go to the church or simply when we are at home with our family having lunch, we are living different forms of grouping.

However, not all of our groupings have the same characteristics or serve the same endings.

This work has as its theme social groups, so we’ll talk about what it means, what are its characteristics, some differences and the types of social groups.

We’ll, also, show the opinion of some writers.

Social groups

The difference between ''social group''

and

''social aggregate'' :

A social aggregate is an amount of people who don't have group feelings and have the minimum of communication, but in a social group there is the interaction and the feeling of unity.

Conclusion

Once we found a little bit more about social groups, we can say that they have a finality, their own structure, common values and specific behaviors.

People’s necessity of affective relationships has been leading to the appearance of lots of social groups.

Characteristics:

Social interaction- It’s important for groups to have verbal or non-verbal communication (understand what the other person wants to say with only a look, for example) and to form affinity bonds;

Each one of us will always belong in a group, but it may not be the same ones that we belonged when we were younger.

Organization- As social groups have similar interests, it is important to work together and to be organized, in order to reach their goals;

What do we take from social groups?

Common objectives- With smiliar objectives, groups achieve goals by coming up with ideas and plans, selecting and making up solutions to make a task as a group;

Unity- When people speak about their group, they speak about it as a whole, with the conscience of an « us »;

In our lives, we participate in many different social groups (at school, in church). So we develop most of our reflections from the ideas of other members.

It is more than obvious that we can change our form to see life and day by day scenes from the influence of others.

Continuity- Long-lasting social groups maintain group stability and interaction.

Specific groups - examples:

Peer group- Is a group of people with approximately the same age, a similar social status and interests;

Club- When it comes to a club, people need to apply to belong there, for example sport clubs;

Gang- Usually, a gang is an urban group that are together in their particular area.

Couple- The smallest group, often constituted by 2 people that pretend to build a family or just want to spend the rest of their life together;

Crew/band- People with similar skills and interests, like a dance crew or a music band;

Social groups as structured collectivities:

In a group, members need to organize themselves in order to define projects, prepare strategies, in short to act rationally.

For that to happen, to each members of the group should be attributed a determined specific task.

It’s from the conjugation of the individual efforts that the group actuation will work.

Of this necessity of organization stands out an ordination of the members that constitute the group.

Each member has his/her place and relates with all the elements. So we found the structure of the social group.

  • Primary groups- Are characterized by more intimate and longer relationships, such as the family;
  • Secondary groups- Are less contact and more formal relationships, but of which the same interests are shared, for example the parochial groups;
  • Intermediate groups- This type of social group is the set of primary and secondary groups, where we involve intimate and formal relationships, such as with our friends in the classroom and the principal of the school.
