is a work that ridicules or condems the weaknesses and wrongdoings of individuals, groups, institutions, or humanity in general.

Draw Some Attention

  • Satire is often used by a person who wishes to metaphorically compare a blight of society to an attrocious event or occurance in order to gain an audience's attention
  • I havent developed a helpful mneumonic, but the best way that I have found for committing this to memory is with a good five minutes with a flash card.
  • A good way to really understand is by using an example. I'll use Johnathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal".
  • When Dr. Preston gave our class this text, we were stunned to read a persuasive argument about a way to end hunger in Ireland: Breeding children for consumption. In the initial reading, we didnt understand that Swift's point was to call attention to a struggling, hungry nation in desperate need of salvation.

English Please?

  • Satire is defined by Webster's Student Dictionary as "the use of sarcasm, irony, or wit in ridiculing and denouncing abuses, follies, customs etc."

OR

  • "as a literary work that ridicules in the same manner."
  • So in colloquial English, the definition of satire is something along these lines: A work (not necessarily just literature, but movies/videos, art, and blogs) that pokes fun at something so that a population can become informed of a situation's faults.
  • After drawing attention to his (Swift's) problem, he had to answer it. His proposed solution: eat babies. His attention to detail (using convincing quotations from authentic sounding interviews etc.) and well planned 'solution' states the problem plainly and points fingers at those he saw as responsible.

Some Examples

  • Like I said earlier, satire isn't only found in literature.

Satire

  • At an even more basic level, satire is

the use of sarcasm to criticize faults

By these two sets of definitions, it's safe to say that that Swift's Modest Proposal is pefrect example of satire. This work's purpose is to open some unwilling eyes (in this case, a government system) to a gruesome exisitance that the governed population faced at the time.

So, drawing attention...
