What is a person?

Who Am I?

Spirit

In Hebrew the word is Ruach, in Greek pneuma

It's the divine power which animates living creatures.

Human life is derived from God. Job 34:14-15

What are the basic components of a person?

There are three main views about the fundamental building blocks of a person.

Dichotomy: 2 parts

Trichotomy: 3 parts

Body, Soul, and Spirit.

This idea came from the Greeks.

Soul connects Body to Spirit?

1 Thess. 5:23, Heb. 4:12

Jesus says a different 3:

Matt. 22:37 to denote the whole

I think soul and spirit are one.

Body and Soul

Matthew 6:25, 10:28

Body and Spirit

Eccl. 12:7, 1 Cor. 5:3,5

2 Parts (not exactly precise)

Rom. 8:10, 1 Cor. 7:34, 2 Cor. 7:1

Soul and Spirit the same

Gen. 35:18 and Psa. 31:5

Rev. 9:6 and 1 Pet. 3:19

Pyschosomatic Unity

Gen. 2:7 Dustbunny becomes a souled creature.

The Bible speaks of 80 different parts of man. Prov. 2:10

So its best to think of man as a unified creature, normally not living apart from its body.

Soul

In Hebrew the word is nephesh, in Greek it's psuke (psookay)

Genesis 2:7 nephesh hayyah "soul of life"

refers to the whole man with emphasis on the non-physical aspects

can refer to biological life Psalm 105:8

Person or self would be a good English translation of psuke

Not a separable, disembodied substance.

Our heavenly life will be an embodied life.

Flesh

In Hebrew basar, in Greek sarx or soma.

The sarx is resurrected.

The sarx is what Jesus became therefore it isn't sinful necessarily.

Heart

In Hebrew lave, in Greek kardia

The center of thought, religion, will, and emotions.

The human control center Matt. 15:16-20 Mark 7:17-19

Most frequent anthropological term in Scripture.

How does this apply to me as a teenager?

The Bible doesn't say we have parts of us at war with one another.

The Bible doesn't separate between physical and non-physical.

Prov. 2:10 and Isa. 52:7 leads us to think of ourselves as a whole.

It's more appropriate to say "I am a body." Not, "I have a body."

Body and soul are separated at death, but this is an aberration.

Your problem is not your body. Your freedom is not your mind.

Matthew 10:28 Fear God who controls your body and soul.
