21st Century Tools

- Instructional programs and hardware that allow teachers and students to interact in new ways or receive real-time data to modify instruction

Evaluation

It's not about doing the same thing with a different tool.

It's not about replacing persistence

and effort with technology.

It's about students learning in ways they never could before!

It is creating engaging lessons while teaching students to use the technologies that will allow them to function in the work world into which they will graduate...

...but it's not enough to teach the

same things in a different way. We need

to go beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic...

... and social studies, and science...

We must teach skills that we may not yet have learned ourselves.

So what are these skills that were

not necessary for this classroom...

...but are essential for this one?

In addition to the 3 Rs (the core content areas)...

...here are the things he told leadership we

need to be teaching our students -

What will I ever do with all the free time in class?

These are the skills that

our students will need to

compete in a global

marketplace.

When we talk about 21st Century Skills, this is what we mean - the four Cs.

21st Century Skills

We will model these skills

for our students in the

classroom, and be very

intentional about incorporating

opportunities to develop these

skills into our lessons.

21st Century Curriculum

In addition to recommending the development of 21st Century

Skills with our students the Partnership is also working nationwide

to create some changes in the emphasis within content areas.

Seek to develop a global

perspective in all classes, expanding

our students' awareness of and

sensitivity to other cultures and religions

while increasing awareness of the global

impact of local actions.

Seek to create a culture

in which World Languages are

an essential part of a rounded

education and a major influence

on developing a global perspective.

Actively promote literacy in

a variety of non-traditional areas, such

as media literacy, information and tech

literacy, and personal financial literacy,

These recommendations are echoed by

Dr. Heidi Hayes-Jacobs in her book

Curriculum 21

We can build a 21st Century Curriculum that meets both the requirements of the state and the future needs of our students.

Their futures depend on

our success.

Throughout Professional Development this year you will have time to discuss how you can use those tools to foster 21st Century Skills.
