Advantages of Geothermal Energy:
Geothermal Energy!
-Dylan Farberman
- Renewable
- Recycles
- Eco-friendly
- Doesn't waste fossil fuels
- Creates many jobs
- Direct use of energy
- Good investment
How it works:
- Pipes are inserted deep in the ground
- Water is poured down the pipes
- The water turns into steam when it comes into contact with the lava
- Steam comes up another pipe and spins a turbine which creates electricity
- Excess water goes back down to the earth
Environmental Impacts:
- Takes up lots of land
- Damages things in nature
- Can cause earthquakes
- Pollution in water
- Toxic gasses in the air
MY Opinion:
I think geothermal energy should NOT be
used as a source of electricity. Some of the reasons I think this are:
- Costs lots lots to build
- Can pollute air/water
- Can cause earthquakes
- There are better sources of electricity
Sources:
Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy:
- High costs
- Hard to find, land survey can take several years
- Most good spots to build are near volcanoes
- Steam can run out
- Hard to transport
- Can release harmful gasses
