Media Evaluation
Strengths and weaknesses.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of contructing this product.
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Within the filming of the preliminary task we had to think about how shots and angles can be used to be more pleasing and exciting to the audience. This helped us in our final film as we thought more deeply about how we could film the footage from a more intresting view point. We chose from inside the cupboard, microwave and fridge.
We learned how to use a programme called 'garage band' to create the music and the sound effect for our film, it enabled us to create a sound that fitted the scence and created suspence when needed. We also leant more about 'final cut pro' which enabled us to cut scences and add footage in the correct order and allow the film to flow. We also learnt how to fade music in and out of certain scences where we wanted silence to create suspence. It was difficult getting hang of all of the technologies but in the end I am pleased to say that we learnt a lot and pulled off a good film production.
How does the text in your film adress the audience?
Overall our film turned out better than we had expected. We started out with having some troubles with the production schedule as the original location that we has chosen was not convinient to get to. However, we soon found a replacement and production was on it's way. We started off strong managine to film all of our footage in the first 2 weeks of our overall 6. We had troubles with some of the camera angles that we had shot but because we where ahead of time it was easy enough to re-shoot from a larger varienty of angles. The problems struck when we came to refilm a part which was meant to be filmed from inside the fridge and had forgot the camera. We had to use a phone camera which showed up smaller on than the other footage on 'final cut pro'. In the end we managed to sort it out by cutting and recolouring. Our editing work soon proved that our film was something we would be very happy with, our scences were quickly put together and sound worked on until fully happy witht he piece. We each had a very large input to what we wanted th film to look like, so each of our ideas where put into the openeing both carefully and well.
Our Media project challeneged thriller films that have been made in the past, where the male character is the main person in the film that fights the evil and becomes the hero. Our overall story line allows us to replace the male with a woman. In our short film we follow the typical conventions of a thriller film, making the women look weak and insane.
In our thriller film we decided to use a women as the main character to go against the norm of having the male as the protagonist. We wanted to put the women in a position of power. However, I believed we made our main character look weak and metally unstable.
In what way does your media project use, develep or challenge conventiontions of real media products?
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The title of our film is called 'deranged' we therefore wanted to make the presentation of this look scary and slightly strange so that the audience understood the nature of our film. We chose a flashing light which flickered on and off the white bold text to represent the main character's states of mind. We chose bold so that it would stand out on the black background.
What type of media institition might distribute your media product and why?
Who would your audience be for your media product?
All thriller movies are rated either a 15 or an 18+ depending on how explicit the material is. Therefore intended audiences will be rather different due to the rating.
I have looked on the website www.imdb.com at the user ratings on thriller films, this should give me an idea into who watches Psychological Thrillers and who to aim my own film at when I produce it.
Silence of the Lambs (1991) by Johnathan Demme, shows that a staggering 181,465 males rated this film an 8.7 compared to 33,117 females which gave it the same rating. This could mean that more males enjoy and watch thriller movies. It also shows that under 18's rated this film the highest out of all of the age categories even though this film has a certificate of 18. (2,083 males under 18 and 502 females under 18) The age group that voted the most amount of times for this film were the 18-29 year olds. (males 99,650 and 18,265 females) Overall I would say that the main target audience for this Psychological thriller where in the age group of 18-29 years old (students and young adults) and it seems to be the case that it appealed to a larger male viewing audience than it did female.
I did the same analysis with the film Shutter Island and the same results where found even though this film is rated a 15.
Therefore I think the target audience of a thriller movie is at the age range of 18-29 year old males, so I will provide the same conventions of a psychological thriller to aim this film at the said age range. I will however make the film a rating of 15 instead of an 18, and may even try to get females more intrested in the thriller genre by introducing a female character which they can relate too.
I think an indepentant film companies in the local area would be an ideal way to promote our film. We would have the freedom to create our own 'hype' about the film using socal networking sites like 'myspace' where we could upload clips of the film to get people intrested in watching it. The reason I would choose an independant film company would be because It would probably not make it to America or such countrys due to money.
