In December 1814 the first missionaries arrived in the Bay of Islands. The CMS had chosen William Hall, John King and Thomas Kendall for the task.

Abel Tasman was one of the greatest Dutch navigators and explorers. He was the first European to sight New Zealand, as well as Tasmania, Tonga, and Fiji.

Why was he Significant to New Zealand History?

Abel Tasman is officially recognised as the first European to 'discover' New Zealand in 1642. The first encounter with Maori was made by him and his men.

Why are the waka significant to Maori?

Voyaging waka forged the links between the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki and New Zealand. Māui, travelled by waka with his brothers into the southern ocean and fished up the North Island, known as Te Ika-ā-Māui (the fish of Māui). He and his brothers got shipwrecked in the storm, and they froze to death in the sea. His waka became the South Island, Te Waka-ā-Māui (Māui’s canoe). Him and his brothers became the Southern Alps.
