The Aviator (2004)

In The Aviator, DiCaprio plays legendary director and aviator Howard Hughes as he goes through the early years of his career from the late 1920s to the mid-1940s. This film earned DiCaprio a Best Actor Oscar nominee, which he did not win. However, the film took home five of the 11 Oscars they were nominated for, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Costume Design.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape was DiCaprio's first major breakthrough in the film industry. This was also his first role that acquired Oscar buzz. DiCaprio plays a mentally challenged boy who is always being looked after by his older brother who is played by Johnny Depp.

In the most recent rendition of the F. Scott Fitzgarald's timeless classic, would-by writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) meets millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and get immersed into the tragic, unfair, dream-and-love filled world of wealthy. This film did not earn any Oscar nominations other than Best Production Design and Best Costumes, both of which were won.

Titanic (1997)

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most talked-about actors of our generation. His impeccable skill and amazing choice in projects has earned him a dedicated audience, further implementing himself as a household name.

It can be argued that Titanic made the world officially fall in love with Leonardo DiCaprio. One of the most famous love stories in film history, poor painter Jack (DiCaprio) and aristocrat Rose (Kate Winslet) fall in love aboard the ill-fated R.M.S Titanic. Surprisingly, DiCaprio was not nominated for his role in Titanic. The film did win many Oscars, however, including Best Picture and Best Director.

This being the more modern take on Shakespeare's phenomenon, Dicaprio plays Romeo as he falls impossibly in love in Juliet (Claire Danes), one of the most famous star-crossed love stories of all time. This film did not earn any Oscar nominations other than Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, which was not won. However, it can be argued that Romeo + Juliet has had a significant amount of influence on pop culture, effecting future Hollywood renditions as well as theatrical productions around the world.

DiCaprio was a pushing force in bringing back time period pieces in film. Many of his films inspire many aspects of pop culture. For example The Great Gastpy has influenced fashion very heavily as well as The Aviator.

The Wolf of Wall Street is one of DiCaprio's movies that is known by most, earning Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing, and Best Directing. Based on a true story of Jordan Belfort, DiCaprio plays a wealthy stock-broker as he rises and falls from being involved in crime and corruption. This is another film that people believed DiCaprio was "snupped" for the Oscar.
