Negative Numbers
And we will use negative number when the number is smaller than zero.
For example:

Mickey has $20 at first, then she borrowed $80 from Gigi. So how much did she owned Gigi ?


The amount of money:
+20-80
= -60 (dollars)

In this case we will use negative numbers.

Positive Numbers
We will use positive number when the number is larger than zero.
For example:

Victoria has $50 at first, then her mother give her another $50. So how much does she has now?


The amount of money:
+50+50
= +100 (dollars)

In this case we will use positive numbers.
Janet is going to Ocean Park, a ticket for adult ticket cost $272. Janet only has $200 in her wallet. How much more do she need in order to have enough money to buy a ticket?
Answer
The amount of money:
+200-272
= -72
Try it out !
We will use positive number when the number is larger than zero and if it is smaller than zero, we will use negative numbers.
If we have same signs , you will always have a positive answer ; if we have different signs , you will always have a negative answer.
