Why is reflective practice important for nursing?
A nurse, Sally, is treating a young boy who has suffered serious injuries after falling out of a tree. The family is stressed and worried about the long term affects on the boy and are asking many questions. In response to their questions Sally replies with ‘I know you have a lot of questions, but right now we need to remain calm and patient, and keep in mind that with a serious injury like this it takes time for improvements to be seen.’ The mother then becomes hysterical claiming that the nurse is saying that their boy won’t recover and will be disabled for the rest of his life.
