Mr. Britanico's father died when he was only thirteen years old. They were poor as a "rat". In the late '70s, he responded to a newspaper advertisement calling for youngsters to a two-year apprenticeship at the Rever Hair Salon in the Mandarin Hotel. He was, then, a student in Commerce at the Philippine Christian University. He Started at the salon by sweeping the floors and washing equipments.
Mr. Nemeno spent his childhood in Butuan City, but went to Cebu at 16 to study Economics at the University of San Carlos. He wanted to be in business even before he had his first job. His first job was that of Economic Researcher at the Private Development of the Philippines in Cebu. His siblings went to Manila, but could not find a job.
Manny Villar came from tondo. His father was a civil engineer. They had a small fish and shrimp business in the Divisoria are where the dynamic Chinese traders inspired him. He studied and finished his business education course at the University of the Philippines, where he also later earned his Master's degree, He worked for SGV and ventured into a seafood business. But this failed and frustrated him, so he just went back to work at the Private Development Corporation of the Philippines, where he specialized in selling World Bank loans.
When he think of buying books, National Book Store comes to out minds. Socorro "Coring" Ramos, the matriarch of National Book Store, had no college education. Being a woman, she had attention for details
Konosuke Matsushita was often referred to by his countrymen as the “god of Japanese management.” Konosuke was the son of a farmer whose property was lost in the commodity market. The family went to open a clog shop, but it failed. He worked as an apprentice at a hibachi shop, a bicycle shop, at Osaka Electric Light Company as an interior wiring assistant and was later promoted as inspector and began to experiment with a new design for a light socket. He eventually left the company and set up his own, together with two other co-employees and his brother-in-law. They started in small tenement in Osaka and after ten months, they managed to sell only 100 sockets with a small profit. When they were almost ready to give up, they received orders for electric fan insulation plates to be used by Kawakita Electric Company and accepted it because it was easy to make plates. Later, they moved larger house and began to produce other products. His attention was later drawn to bicycle lamps. His scheme worked and distributors were satisfied with the performance of his bulbs. The company was named Matsushita Electric Works with 300 employees.
Konosuke died in 1989, but left Matsushita a big success in the field of electronics.
The life of Leonardo Sarao is from rags to riches. Poverty forced him to drop out of school after graduation from elementary. He helped his parents by being “cochero” and construction helper.
Afterwards, he was employed in a jeepney, bodybuilding, and repair shop. Such experience gave him the idea of putting up his own shop. He opened his own business with his brother as partner with a capital of P700.00.
Leonardo Sarao is now 72 years old, chairman and president of several companies in various fields. All his children are professionals and helped managed their own companies. The secret of his success - hard works, lots of prayers, and being truthful to his fellowmen.
Brother Mike: A religious entrepreneur
During his childhood days, he was a quiet type of son who helped his family in piggery business. He suffered a lot of criticisms and condemnations. Once called “estafador and swindler” – life assumed risk by turning to God – by forming El Shaddai and proclaimed in God’s name that one can be changed and become a good person.
The evangelical movement has grown by leaps and bound from its modest beginning as a radio ministry, when Velarde successfully re-packaged the faith into a form of pop culture. Hence, no new or revised/updated versions of the Bible was sold by Brother Mike. He simply repackaged or innovated the religious songs to the tune of pop music. Lovers turned to faith believers have joined Brother Mike Velarde. What a wonderful ways to evangelize the lost flock of Christian faith and the entire Roman Catholic community, and at the same time, enrich one’s religious belief with Holy Bible as the main product or entry point and apply the principles of entrepreneurship.
Crispin chose to spend his time and his youth wisely. He says, "If you are forward-looking, there's definitely a room for advancement". After his training at Rever, he moved up to other salons and learned everything he could, not only on the intricacies of hairstyling, but also about the realities of running a salon. He had waited for 20 years before putting up his own business. He believes that it is important to establish oneself and develop the skills needed in a business like this.
In 1997, he put up his first salon at the Shangri-la Mall. Within a year of opening, he was able to break-even. Now, he has about 6 salons over Metro Manila, which cater to the well-heeled class.
Hair Bytes Salon
While working his way up the ranks, he ventured in some businesses like selling garments, toys and even toothpaste. He even developed his own toothpaste gadget that helped in squirting the last bits of toothpaste in the zinc packaging being used before. He got a break and supplied these to big department stores for two years. Unfortunately, toothpaste manufacturers came up with plastic tubes and eliminated the use of his gadget.
In 1985, he became a manager at Metrobank, but he had set up his two major goals: to set up another business and to improve his health. He was so thin and this brought to him to buy a muscle toning equipment. With it came a diet that calls for fruit shakes. He used a pawned blender to concoct shakes to complement his regimen. When he did them, he thought of selling them and this he did. He set up a table at the BPI canteen in Makati. He hired a lady to operate the business as he went to work. After two years, his business was earning P10,000 a month. With this, he resigned from his job in Metrobank where he was receiving a monthly salary of P20,000.
"The business won't grow if I'm a part-timer," he said. "There 's the drive. There's the passion. There's a strong desire to succeed. I think that's basic."
He decided to take the risk as he said he was still young and can afford to risk another failure. Aside from the shake, he also put up "Dodong's Special Lechon," but it failed. Then, the "Boathouse," a take-out shop for fish, but it failed again. Soon after, his shake was in 100 canteens, and by the time he celebrated his 35th birthday, Nutrilicious was already posting an annual gross sales of about P50 million.
He was thankful for the management skills he learned in his employment years. He said that this gave him the opportunity to master organizational skills and develop an aura of professionalism. He read self-help books and never lost hear. The failures he had in the past businesses did not lose his drive to make it on his own. He had to go back to several times ti his first institutional client, Burger Machine, before bagging the account. He filled himself with technical aspects of food processing, and was always open to receive comments on the product he offered.
After three years of working at PDCP, he resigned from his job and decided to venture again in another business. He borrowed P10,000 which he used to buy two reconditioned trucks for his gravel and sand business. After a year, Manny Villar learned much about construction business and building houses on 80 lots sold to him by BF Homes. He made his first million at the age 26 and dreamt that one day, he will become the biggest home builder in the Philippines.
He, then, immersed himself on low-cost housing, building his C&P Homes. He also put up Capitol Bank to complement his housing projects. This ranked more millions for him. He, then, proceeded to win a seat in Congress and later became Speaker of the House. To date, he is now a senator of the country.
Coring came from a poor family. Her mother was widowed and reared her and five other siblings all by herself. Her grandmother had a stall in the market and sold bananas, vinegar, and wooden shoes. This is we Coring had learned the basics of retail trade.
Coring wanted to be a doctor, but her family could not afford college education high school, she went to work as a salesgirl in a small branch of Goodwill Bookstore. Goodwill was owned by the Tan-Ramos family and this was on the ground floor of Panciteria Nacional. It was here were she met the young Jose Tan-Ramos who later became her husband. Coring later took over the branch from the family and renamed it Nacional Bookstore (named after the panciteria). The store was just a corner rented space inside a big haberdashery shop. Coring was the tireless boss, a tindera with only a counter, bookshelf, and faith.
Coring does not believe in retirement and acknowledged that hard work is important
The story of Coring Ramos tells us of the entrepreneurial qualities of women and their instinct and penchant for details. Her story proves that entrepreneurship is not a domain of men, but for everyone.
