Tidal Power
How does using the ocean as an energy resource interact in both positive and negative ways within each of Earth's spheres?
Uses and importance of the ocean as an energy resource.
Tidal Electricity – Tidal Energy is being used to generate 240 MW of Tidal Electricity at very low costs
Energy Storage – Tidal Energy can also be used as a store of Energy.Like many of the hydroelectric dams which can be used a large Energy Storage ,so Tidal Barrages with their reservoirs can be modified to store energy.
Provide Protection to Coast in High Storms – Tidal Barrages can prevent Damage to the Coast during High Storms.
What needs to be done, if anything, to protect and preserve the ocean if it is used as an energy resource?
The ocean is one of our energy resources and we need to protect and preserve it. Some ways to do so are:

Use Fewer Plastic Products-- Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year.
Help Take Care of the Beach-- clean after yourself, and encourage others to do the same.
Support Organizations Working to Protect the Ocean-- Many institutes and organizations are fighting to protect ocean habitats and marine wildlife.

Does using the ocean as an energy resource benefit society?
Yes, tidal Energy is a renewable energy source. This energy source is a result of the gravitational fields from both the sun and the moon, combined with the earth’s rotation around its axis, resulting in high and low tides. Tidal power is also an environmentally friendly energy source. In addition to being a renewable energy, it does not emit any climate gases and does not take up a lot of space.

Tidal energy is a renewable source of electricity which does not result in the emission of gases responsible for global warming or acid rain associated with fossil fuel generated electricity. Use of tidal energy could also decrease the need for nuclear power, with its associated radiation risks. Changing tidal flows by damming a bay or estuary could, however, result in negative impacts on aquatic and shoreline ecosystems, as well as navigation and recreation.
While actual impacts of large-scale operations have not been observed, a range of potential impacts can be projected. For example, wave energy installations can require large expanses of ocean space, which could compete with other uses—such as fishing and shipping—and cause damage to marine life and habitats. Some tidal energy technologies are located at the mouths of ecologically-sensitive estuary systems, which could cause changes in hydrology and salinity that negatively impact animal and plant life.
Although all tides produce power, there are only a few locations where tidal power can be harnessed. A suitable location must contain the following:

The tide has to rise to unusual height.
At least 7 meter tidal differences are required.15
Stable conditions for a barrier or turbine to be built into.
Environmental disturbances must be reduced to a minimum.
