Secret Life of Bees Soundtrack Project
By Zack and Mack Orooji
Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me
In too deep
Say I'm in too deep (in too deep)
And it's been two years
I miss my home
But there's a fire burning in my bones
Still believe
Yeah, I still believe

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

"Angels on my Side" by Rick Astley
Sometimes I just don't feel like waking up
wanna stay inside my dreams
sometimes I feel like I am breaking up
do you know just how that feels

Hope is for the hopeful
it's a dream that never dies
faith is for the faithful
I see it in your eyes

And I got angels on my side
I got angels flying high
and everything gon' be alright
'cause I got angels on my side

I need the people that I really love
to only give me truth
don't fake it, I can't take it
my heart is close to breaking
it reminds me of my youth

Hope is for the hopeful
it's a dream that never fades
faith is for the faithful
And I will not be swayed

'Cause I got angels on my side
I got angels flying high
and everything gon' be alright
'cause I got angels on my side

Everything gon' be alright,
everything gon' be alright,
everything gon' be alright,
everything gon' be alright

"Oh Susanna" by Neil Young
I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee
I'm going to Louisiana,
Susanna for to see
It rained all night
The day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot,
I froze myself
But Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna,
Don't you cry for me
I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

I had a dream the other night
When everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna
Coming down that hill
The buckwheat cake
Was in her mouth
The tear was in her eye
Says I, I'm coming from the south
Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna,
Don't you cry for me
I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

Oh, Susanna,
Don't you cry for me
I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I'm found.
Was blind but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Then when we first begun.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see

Explanation
I took my baby on a Saturday bang
"Boy, is that girl with you?"
Yes, we're one and the same

Now I believe in miracles
And a miracle has happened tonight

But if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

They print my message in the Saturday Sun
I had to tell them I ain't second to none

And I told about equality
And it's true
Either you're wrong or you're right

But if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

I am tired of this devil
I am tired of this stuff
I am tired of this business
So when the going gets rough

I ain't scared of your brother
I ain't scared of no sheets
I ain't scare of nobody
Girl, when the goin' gets mean

[L. T. B. rap performance]
Protection for gangs, clubs and nations
Causing grief in human relations
It's a turf war on a global scale
I'd rather hear both sides of the tale
See, it's not about races
Just places
Faces
Where your blood comes from
Is where your space is
I've seen the bright get duller
I'm not going to spend my life being a color

[Michael]
Don't tell me you agree with me
When I saw you kicking dirt in my eye

But if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

I said if you're thinkin' of being my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

I said if you're thinkin' of being my brother
It don't matter if you're black or white

Ooh, ooh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, now
Ooh, ooh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, now

[2x]
It's black, it's white
It's tough for you to get by
It's black, it's white, woo
"Black or White" by Michael Jackson
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be

For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be

I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be
"Let it Be" by The Beatles
Another day has gone
I'm still all alone
How could this be
You're not here with me
You never said goodbye
Someone tell me why
Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

But you are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
But you are not alone

'Lone, 'lone
Why, 'lone

Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
I can hear your prayers
Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
Then forever can begin

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

you are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
you are not alone

Whisper three words and I'll come runnin'
And girl you know that I'll be there
I'll be there

You are not alone
I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay
you are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

you are not alone
I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

you are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

For you are not alone...
Not alone ohh
You are not alone
You are not alone
Say it again
You are not alone
You are not alone
Not alone, Not alone
If you just reach out for me girl
In the morning, in the evening
Not alone, not alone
You and me not alone
Oh together together
Not not being alone
Not not being alone
"You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson
"Climb Every Mountain" by The Sound of Music
Climb every mountain
Search high and low
Follow every byway
Every path you know

Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Every day of your life
For as long as you live

Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Every day of your life
For as long as you live

Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
Till you find your dream

Quote: "(Rosaleen) 'Let me get this straight. You picked Tiburon 'cause your mother had a picture with that town written on the back--that's it?' " (p.51)
Explanation
Explanation
Explanation
This song is telling the story of Lily's journey. Lily found her path through a picture of her mother, which relates to the lyric "Every path you know". Lily had to overcome several obstacles, physical and emotional, to get to her dream which corresponds to the lyric "Climb every mountain". Lily's dream was to be known and loved, and by escaping her home, walking and hitchhiking to Tiburon, developing a bond with women and a man (Zach) that truly love and know her, and overcoming T. Ray, she has found her dream. Also, Lily loves the man and the women she has grown to know with all her heart, which connects to the lyric "A dream that will need, all the love you can give." This song also links with the dreams motif that appeared in the novel, telling the listener to not give up on their dreams. Dreams don't occur to satisfy the human mind with fantasies, dreams tell the dreamer what he/she really loves, and encourages them to pursue their dream. The scene that this song would fit best is in the ending credits, because it is a good summary of Lily's effort throughout the book/movie.
This song expresses the feeling of fighting and believing in yourself, which are feelings that match Lily when she decides to make the bold decision to run away from her house to Tiburon. She does not let Rosaleen going to jail stop her either, and Lily breaks her out, showing how much effort Lily has in herself to make this trip to Tiburon. Also, later in this song it has a lyric about staying strong from this point on, which is what Lily does after running away from home. For these reasons, this song would best be played during the end of Lily and T. Ray's fight before Lily leaves, and at the beginning of, and possibly throughout the scene of Lily and Rosaleen traveling to Tiburon.

Quote: "'You don't scare me,' I repeated, louder this time. A brazen feeling had broken loose in me, a daring
something
that had been locked up in my chest." (pg 38)
This song is telling that it will be alright because there are angels on their side. Similarly, Lily has the Boatwrights and the Daughters of Mary, who all care for Lily, assuring everything is alright for her. I believe that this song belongs in the scene Lily looks back at the porch of the Boatwright's house to see all of the Boatwright sisters and Daughters of Mary, because her thoughts comparing the Boatwrights and the Daughters to mothers could also relate these women to angels over Lily.

Quote: "I have more mothers than any eight girls off the street. They are the moon shining over me." (pg 302)
This song is the song commonly sang by May when she gets sad and feels misery or grief. It mainly tells Susana simply not to cry, which May finds herself doing way too often. This song helps May not have to go out to the wall as much, and assists in dealing with the sadness. A good scene to put this song in is when everybody is waiting for May to return from the wall inside of the house, because it would foreshadow bad things to come, and hopefully cause everyone to feel a small portion of May's pain, in order to connect with and understand May.

Quote: "May had been gone a whole five minutes when August got up and began to pace. She walked out to the porch and back and then stared out toward the wall." (pg189)
Explanation: This song played by June on the cello in the novel causes everybody in the small church service in the Boatwright's house to better connect to the words August says, and this music brings another component to the story rather than just speaking. Additionally, it causes them to have a greater response to the story August tells. This song would best go in the scene in which August is telling the story of the Lady of Chains, because in the novel, June is already playing this song on the cello during August's story telling, and this song empowers the words August says to a greater extent.

Quote: ".June wedged the cello between her legs and played "Amazing Grace," and the Daughters of Mary got to their feet and swayed together like colorful seaweed on the ocean floor." (pg 110)
This song shows indifference to race, and informs that he can be in a relationship with anybody, regardless of ther race. This song also speaks about the troubles of African-Americans, and tries to convey the message that two people of different race are still "one and the same." This relates very closely with the relationship between Zack and Lily because they want to be together, but race, especially because of the time period, separates the two, or at least tries to. This song would best belong during the time Lily and Zach ride together inside the truck, because this is when Lily thinks about this topic the most.

Quote: "'We can't be together now, Lily, but one day, after I've gone away and become somebody, I'm gonna find you, and we will be together again." (pg 231)
Quote: "Mostly, though, I saw the blaze of love and anguish that had come so often into her (May's) face. In the end, it had burned her up." (pg 199)
This statement gives off a feeling of motherlessness, and matches the motherlessness motif with lyrics such as "you are not here with me," "I thought I heard you the other night," and you never said goodbye". All of these statements describe how Lily often feels, longing for her mother. Lily, although she is still moving on in her life, frequently dreams about her mother, and thinks back on her, and looks at her things she has of her mother. A scene this would be best in is when Lily is looking at the things she has of her mother in the orchard.

This song is related to letting things go, and getting strength from religious deities. This song would've been very good for May to listen to before deciding to commit suicide. May had her way of letting things go, the wailing wall, but this song would've reinforced the strength of the wailing wall. This song is also related to Lily's hardships, and Mother Mary's relationship with Lily. Lily found her way to August's house only because Mother Mary guided her there. Lily didn't break down emotionally only because she had a chance to talk with and touch Mother Mary. This song is a way for people to detach from grief, and would be played during the Mary Day festivities.

This song states some of the problems of the world, and includes discrimination as one of these problems. This song questions the lack of sensitivity and sincerity of the people of the world, and even mentions how discrimination brings about hatred. This song concludes with a call to a Father, most likely a religious figure, much like Mother Mary, for help, and a call to action. This song would be placed in the scene right after Rosaleen gets hit with a flashlight, when she is lying down on the bed. The reason behind this is because the white men did not show love at all when striking Rosaleen in the head, but Lily shows love by risking herself to break Rosaleen out of the hospital.

Quote: "That was when the dealer lifted the flashlight over his head, then down, smashing it into Rosaleen's forehead. She dropped to her knees." (p.35)
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Ah

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high

Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming,
I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son,
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man,
Well, it surely means that I don't know

On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune,
But I hear the voices say

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more no!

Carry on,
You will always remember
Carry on,
Nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry,
Don't you cry no more,

No more!
What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma

Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah

Madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach?
Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love, the love, the love

It just ain't the same, old ways have changed
New days are strange, is the world insane?
If love and peace are so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong?

Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone

So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover

The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach?
Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love, the love, the love?
(One world, one world)

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' the wrong direction

Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema

Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity

That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive 'til love is found
Now ask yourself

Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?

Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love?

Sing with me y'all:
One world, one world (We only got)
One world, one world (That's all we got)
One world, one world
And something's wrong with it (Yeah)
Something's wrong with it (Yeah)
Something's wrong with the wo-wo-world, yeah
We only got
(One world, one world)
That's all we got

This song is about a son carrying on with his life and leaving his father, with lyrics such as "Carry on my wayward son" and "Now your life is no longer empty". This compares to the Secret Life of Bees, when Lily makes it apparent that she is not leaving with T-Ray back to Sylvan at the end of the novel. August supports Lily's decision, and helps her by giving T-Ray an excuse for leaving Lily at the Boatwright's house. T-Ray, most likely happy with this proposal, takes August up on her offer, and lets Lily stay there, where she will carry on, while he carries on with his own life. The scene that this would best in is in the scene T-Ray is driving off from the Boatwright's house and leaving there.

Quote: "I still tell myself that when he drove away that day he wasn't saying good riddance; he was saying,
Oh, Lily, you're better off there in that house of colored women. You never would've flowered with me like you will with them
. " (pg 299-300)
