An area of study with various approaches to the study of music (broadly defined) that emphasize its cultural, social, material, cognitive, biological, and other dimensions or contexts.
• It originated in Brazil
o The identity of the Samba generates in Rio de Janeiro
• It’s a type of dance and music
• Different forms of The Samba
o Rhythms are usually played in 2/4 time
o Music is fast and full of energy
o Solo style and partner
• The samba is known mostly in Brazil
o The music is common in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Bahia
o The carnival in Rio is the biggest festival in the world
• The Samba has become an icon of Brazil
o The samba is entertaining because of the fancy costumes, fast rhythms and fun steps

Tango and Samba
-Double bass is used in tango
-Evolution of this instrument reveals several years of changes in its design
-Earliest known model was in 1516, by Hanns Vogel

The bandoneon is a type of concertina, popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Lithuania, essential for Tango style music.
•Another word for Tango is Buenos Aires; Buenos Aires is a city
•Originated in society's "underbelly"
•Titles of first tangos refers to characters of the World
•Tango spread out throughout the underworld
•The bandoneon was introduced
•Tango became popular in early 1900's in Paris
•The tango was the first of many Latin dances to sweep Europe
•Rudolph Valentino started in the first Hollywood Tango movie "The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" in 1926

Samba example
In latin music percussion often plays a large role. Lots of latin music is up beat, and exciting. The percussion gives the music the exciting beat it has and it gives alot of emotion and groove.

Example: Pandeiro

-The designs of the double bass has changed over years
-2 main types:
-One resembles a large violin
-One resemble a viol
-Both are very similar in appearance yet produce completely different sounds
-Both are played with a bow
