as a pure substance. A pure substance is matter which has uniform properties and is one type of substance throughout. This resource was first discovered in 1789 by Martin Klaproth in a substance known as pitchblende. Supposedly, uranium was created about 6.6 billion years ago in a supernova. Supernova: A star can no longer handle its nuclear fuel and explodes in a burst of light. The problem with this substance, is that its slow radioactive decay causes convection and continental drift. However, this does not negatively affect these natural resources as well as the living organisms that occupy them. Water with low amounts of uranium is safe to drink, plants absorb this substance through their roots as it is safe when washed, and lastly, the uranium concentrations in soil are not high enough to affects animals living in this habitat. PLANTS When uranium is put into nuclear plants for power and energy, it is extremely dangerous and hazardous as a single mistake can release radioactivity into the entire area and environment. A minor accident may only affect the power plant but a major one could potentially spread radiation worldwide. This will affect all living organisms on earth, and if it is a serious incident, they may die from this immense amount of radioactivity. Nuclear power may be progressing in safety with the new designs and technology discovered, but it still carries unpredictable cautions that no other source of power does. WATER SOIL Uranium is present in the air as dust and the tiny particles fall onto the surface of... Nuclear Power $59.3o Even better, uranium is a great energy source that is plentiful in many places like the United States. In fact, France gets more than 75% of their electricity from these nuclear power plants, all fueled up by uranium! This way we are not using up the resources which will run out in a short period of time such as coal. By choosing uranium, the world is being preserved for the future and when mining it, we are not effecting too much of the biosphere. Our earth has a supply of Uranium that won't run out for at least 5 billion years, as compared to other natural resources which will be gone in about 150 years and the rate in which we are stripping them from the earth. Nuclear energy is air-pollution free as opposed to other types! This type of energy source does not involve burning fossil fuels and therefore, does not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Surprising enough, nuclear power is as
environmentally friendly as solar, hydro, wind and geothermal energy in a way! A terrorist may construct a nuclear bomb, therefore, affecting an entire local area. The entire biosphere and habitat around is effected and this is because of the safety and security issues that uranium and nuclear energy come with. SOCIAL IMPACTS Although various techniques were invented for the safety of these miners and workers, they are still under the risk of being in direct contact with radioactive ore, which may be lethal as they continue their job. The act of extracting uranium will always be hazardous no matter how many safety precautions are put into place. Uranium is radioactive even sitting in the ground, which leads to the problem of how to properly dispose the remaining material after extraction. Uranium Miners
Power Plant Workers People Who Live Close To Nuclear Power Plants Uranium causes radiation even when buried underground, which makes life much more dangerous for those who live beside these massive power plants. Radiation is a huge problem because it is the main cause of cancer, which is a group of almost incurable diseases found in humans. People Who Live Anywhere Uranium is highly explosive when added to heat, and when an incident happens, the whole community is affected. Radiation is a gas, meaning that once it is released, it takes up the space that it is given. Therefore, when a nuclear power plant explodes, the radioactivity is spread through the entire community. As a result, this will even affect those who live far away from these power plants. Uranium also takes up a large amount of space when disposed, affecting the amount of land we have to support more than 7 billion humans living on earth today. Not only humans are affected by the radiation from explosive nuclear energy, animals and plants may get sick or even die. NUCLEAR DISASTER
THE WORLD What Do I Think ? Uranium and nuclear power is a very controversial subject. Some people feel that it something that we should have never considered while others feel that it is the best thing in the world. In our opinion, it all depends on the perspective which you look at it from, however, in the end, the negatives end up overpowering the positives. OR In other words: The DEVASTATING DISASTER OF JAPAN We sacrifice all we have for the little benefits
nuclear energy comes with... is it really as good as it may seem?That is the question which we must keep asking ourselves. On Friday March 11 2011, a shocking 9.0-earthquake shook the land of Japan... triggering a 15-METER
TSUNAMI that disabled the power supply of 3 Fukushima Daiichi reactors, causing a MASSIVE NUCLEAR
EXPLOSION After two weeks, the three reactors were stable but there was no proper heat sink for removal of decay heat from fuel. The Negatives Clearly Outweigh The Positive Positive Negative Luckily, there have been no deaths or radiation sickness from this nuclear accident, not including including the deaths involved with the earthquake
and tsunami. However, over 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes for safety and as a result, these people delayed their return to ensure that the radiation from these plants was mostly cleared. It's hard to believe, but these nuclear accidents can occur in your own backyard. In fact, here in Canada, 1958, a damaged uranium caught fire and split because of a lack of cooling. If things had been any worse, it would've effected the environment and society today. Most people think that these incidents only effect the environment, however, people are also a major concern. In Belgium 2006, there were very severe health effects to a worker as a result of a large amount of radiation exposure. We hope that you now have a full understanding of what radioactive pure substances can do to both our society and environment. Some accidents can happen from regulations not being regarded, and others from improper disposal methods. Either way, we must learn from what we have done. It is our world to preserve and we must follow through with our duties. It may not be easy, but with the right regulations and precautions, we can make uranium a pure substance that will...
