Water Pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies. (eg. leakage of oil from the boat into the sea.)
Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water.
In most cases the effect is damaging to the animals that live in the water and people who consume the water.

Causes
Ocean and marine dumping
This is when people
throw wastes and rubbish
into the sea and cause
water pollution.
The wastes that are dumped into the oceans tend to have
toxic substances
which
soak in all the oceanic oxygen
. This leads to a marked depletion of oxygen available to mammals and other fishes causing them to
die in their natural habitats
When the animals had died for a long time, they will rot and
cause water pollution and unpleasant smell.

Many liquid products are stored in metal and steel tubes underground. Other sewage systems run in underground tubes. Overtime, they
rust
and begin to
leak into water bodies
and
cause water pollution.
Underground storage and tube leakages.
If that happens, they
contaminate
the soils and the liquids in them end up in many nearby water bodies.

There are
harmful chemical
in the liquid products

Improper disposal of sewage

Sewage refers to
solid or liquid waste
produced by
households or industries.
It is released into rivers, these water bodies get
polluted
This is because sewage contains human waste, detergent and chemicals.
It usually contains
large amount of toxic chemicals
which is
illegally disposed
directly into the river.
Some of the substances in sewage such as
detergents are
non-biodegradable.

They
cannot be easily broken down
into harmless substances.
Water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and is a very important resource for people and the environment. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. This consequently harms human health and the natural environment. Hence, it is very important to know how to reduce water pollution.
As a result, the substances remain in the water and cause
water pollution
Oil Spills
Oil spills can occur when the hull of an oil tanker is
torn by sharp rocks
or if the tanker
collides
with another ship.
This causes
the oil spill into the sea
.
It is
very difficult
to clean up oil spills.
This is because they
spread over large areas
and are
not easily broken down.

Sewage treatment
Before raw sewage can be safely released back into the environment, it needs to be treated correctly in a water treatment plant.
Sewage goes through a number of chambers and chemical processes

Negative impact on human health
These poisons may be
passed on to us
when we consume the contaminated animals.
In situation of improper disposal of waste,
the poison waste
can
accumulate
in the fish and shellfish.
At public
People may also suffer from
cholera and typhoid
when they drink the water that is contaminated.
Industrial water waste
Economic loss
Nitrification
Water pollution also affects

the economy.
Oil spill
threaten
fishermen's livelihood and fishing industries.
Ozone waste water treatment
The spilled oil reaches a tourist resort along a coast , it
dirties the beach

and makes it

unattractive

to tourists.
Cleaning up oil spills requires
huge effort and money
. This is because oil spills can
spread over a large area
and is
not easily to broke down.
Conserve water.
Turn off the tap when water isn't necessary and try to take shorter showers if possible.
helps prevent water shortages
reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment

Buy more environmentally safe cleaning liquids
less dangerous to the environment

not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers
reduce runoffs of the material into nearby water sources

In situation of oil spill, when animals, such as sea bird come to contact with the polluted water. the oil
sticks to their feathers.
This cause them to
freeze to death and drown.

Help clean up litter in water-filled areas.
This includes beaches, lakes, and oceans

market
Use of biological filters and processes that naturally
degrade
the organic waste material.
Tertiary phase
---
Almost all solid particles are
removed
from the water and chemical additives are supplied to get rid of any left-over impurities.
Solid particles and inorganic material is
removed
by the use of filters.
Reduce the amount and toxicity of the waste

Fertilizers applied to crops by farmers to help plant growth and increase the yield
contain nitrogen
.
Bacteria

in the soil

convert the nitrogen

in the fertilizer to nitrates, making it easier for the plants to absorb.
Immobilization is a process where the
nitrates

become

part of the soil organic matter
.
When oxygen levels are low, another form of
bacteria
then
turns the nitrates into gases
such as nitrogen, nitrous oxide and nitrogen dioxide.
The conversion of these nitrates into gas is called nitrification. This
prevents nitrates from leaching

into

the soil and contaminating groundwater
.
Ozone is a very
reactive gas
that can oxidize bacteria, molds, organic material and other pollutants found in water.

Ozone converts back into oxygen quickly, and leaves no trace once it has been used.
 There are no nasty odors or residues produced from the treatment.

Oxidizes substances such as iron and sulfur so that they can be filtered out of the solution.

Kills bacteria effectively.
Using ozone to treat waste water has many benefits:

In 2010, there was a
huge oil spill
in America by BP.
Of the 400 miles of Louisiana coast, about 125 miles have been polluted by the oil spill.
Over 1,000 animals (birds, turtles, mammals) have been
reported dead
The animals affected by the spill that are still alive
only about 6%
have been reported cleaned
But many biologists and other scientists predict they will die too.
Water is one of the
most common resources used on earth
. Waterfall of fresh water barely any of it is fresh.
97%

of earth’s water is
too salty
or polluted.
2%
is
too far underground to reach
. That leaves
only 1% for clean drinking water
. Since we have a
low supply of fresh water
we need to conserve it. Conserving it means to save it.
