The issues of food and nutrition have been the main focus of research in the Pilot Foresight Project in its research area of "Health and Life".
The future of the sector

Trend forecasts
until 2030
There will be a consolidation of production – the number of micro-enterprises will decrease as a result of larger enterprises.
Some Polish companies will build strong alliances together with other companies from Europe and the world.
Strong Polish brands will be acquired by
global concerns and Polish production groups will become large and established – they will successfully compete (in a cluster model)
with groups from the West.
Environmental protection systems will be unified,
EU will change its agricultural policy in order to protect the market against global competition,
EU will maintain the financial support for agriculture, but the distribution channels of funds will be changed.

The level of financial support for education from GDP will not grow significantly,
The costs of supplying food products to the consumer will be reduced,
Post-production waste generated by the agriculture and food industry will be largely used to produce energy.

Infrastructural investments in science and higher education in Poland have amounted to 6.5 billion Euros.

The position of Poland is particularly strong in this sector. The value of the poultry production industry amounts to 3.5 billion Euros (in comparable prices), which places Poland in the second position, just behind France, among the EU producers with a market share of 13%. Poland and the other new members of the European Union are constantly increasing their share in the EU market. The efficiency of the Polish poultry industry has reached similar levels to that of Great Britain, Portugal and Belgium, with the average revenues of a typical poultry company reaching similar levels to those in such countries as: France, Spain, Italy and Belgium - Polish poultry producers are competitive in the European common market, developing their export dynamically and with distinct price advantages.

Comparing the Polish diary industry with its counterparts in other EU countries shows that Poland has grown stronger in Europe. Constant growth of production, decrease in employment and decrease in a number of active dairy companies result in reducing the distance between the milk processing in Poland and the average state of the milk processing in the EU.

Red meat processing is the largest branch of the food industry, not only in Poland but in the whole EU (17.5% share) Poland is the sixth biggest producer of meat products in the EU and the value of the Polish meat industry is nearly half that of the entire value of all the new EU members put together. Employment in the meat industry amounts to 12.7% and is relatively high – third place just behind Germany and France. There are over 3,000 businesses in this sector, which constitutes 7.4% of all the meat processing companies in the EU (40.8 thousand)
