•The men of the Plateau were skilled hunters. There were many animals in the Plateau region, so they hunted for a wide variety of food.
•They mostly hunted deer and caribou as a source of food.
•In fact, all men in the Plateau culture were expected to hunt for deer, mainly white-tailed deer.
•However, men, who, over time, had acquired additional physical and spiritual abilities, became the 'professional' hunters.
•These 'professional' hunters were the ones who hunted bear and mountain goat.
•The people of the Plateau also hunted smaller animals for furs and food such as:
In war, they used spears, bows and arrows, knives, and clubs.
During times of extended warfare, there were even stockades built around villages.
•For the most part, the Plateau people were peaceful people, but wars did occur on occasion.
•The cause of war was usually food. For example, the Secwepemc sometimes raided Stl'atl'imx areas for slaves or salmon.
•In war, they used spears, bows and arrows, knives, and clubs.
•During times of extended warfare, there were even stockades built around villages.
The people of the Plateau region were semi-nomadic, meaning they moved around in search of food.
It was the woman's job to prepare all of the food for her family.
If she prepared the meat or fish to eat fresh, she roasted it in on spits over the fire, baked it in the ashes, or boiled it in baskets (with hot rocks and water).
However, most of the food was caught in the summer and preserved to keep for the winter months.
Smoked and dried fish and meat were more important to the Plateau people than fresh fish and meat. This was because they could preserve the fish and meat and eat it during the tougher winter months.
Women cleaned the salmon, cut them into filets and hung them out in the sun to dry.
•In the 1730s horses arrived in the Canadian Plateau region from the south, which greatly improved travel.
•Horses were used as pack animals for carrying people
•The Ktunaxa people were the first to use horses.
•Ktunaxa saddles were made of wood covered with rawhide and sewn with sinew.
They lived in one of three shelters, depending on the season: a pit house, a tipi, or a tule-mat lodge
.•Even though the plateau region of Canada was one of the smaller areas, it was still very diverse in terms of geography.
•It encompassed the Columbian Plateau region of British Columbia between the coastal region of the province and the Rocky Mountains.
•The First Peoples of the Plateau region lived in an area of Canada that was dominated by the Rocky Mountains and their valleys.
•The territory of the Plateau people also included expanses of forests, and many natural waterways (rivers and lakes).
•Boreal forests, with mostly coniferous trees, dominated the landscape of the Plateau region.
•There were also many lakes in the area.
•Some of the largest and most important lakes in the region were located in the Okanagan valley.
•Rivers were the most important natural resource to the Plateau people, because of their abundance of pacific salmon during the spring and fall salmon runs.
•The three most important rivers in the area were the Thompson River, the Kootenay River and the Columbia River.
