In this presentation, you will learn about the vocal folds, their importance, and the different parts that make up your voice. Let's begin.
Osculation of the Vocal Folds
The vocal cords must adduct to make noise. Adducting is when your vocal cords come together to either trap air in your lungs or vibrate to make noise.
The normal length of vocal cords for an adult male is around 16mm and for a female the length is only 10mm.
Types of Folds
The larynx is a tube-like structure made of an intricate system of connective tissue, muscle and cartilage. Even though we think the larynx is made mainly to produce noise, the actual biological function of the larynx is to protect your lungs from food.
Anatomy & Physiology of the Vocal Mechanism
The faster your vocal cords move the higher the pitch. Some vocal cords vibrate up to 2000 times per second. That would make a very high pitched sound. The same applies for the lower end, only vibrating 60 times per second.

Systems that Control Your Voice
Have you ever thought of the systems that control your voice? In total there are three: the respiratory system (that controls breathing), the laryngeal mechanism (the vocal folds, laryngeal cartilages, muscles, and nerves), and the supraglottic tract (the spaces above the vocal folds). They all work together to create a unique sound.
The vocal cords osculate so fast the bare human eye can't see. It is estimated that they osculate around 440 times per second at a regular pitch voice.
More about the Supraglottic Tract
The supraglottic tract is in the space above the vocal folds, including the back of throat, sinus cavities, mouth, and nasal passages.

There are two vocal folds. The true folds (the vocal cords), and the false folds (the vestibular folds). The false folds protect the true folds.

The epiglottis must always be open while you talk. The epiglottis is also the thing that keeps food out of your throat and prevents you from choking. This is why you should never talk and eat.
Your vocal cords are made up of muscles known as thyroarytenoid. These muscles will bunch up to make vibrations slower causing a lower pitch. The cricothyroid is the muscle that lengthens the vocal cords causing a higher pitch.
There are two main nerves that go to your vocal cords. The more important one: the recurrent laryngeal nerve; and the more sensitive or easily damaged one: the superior laryngeal nerve.

There are two kinds of folds.
This fact is important because one of these folds is what the whole presentation is about. This fact helps to categorize the different parts of your voice.
The higher your pitch, the more your voice oscillate
This fact is important because without this ability, your voice's pitch wouldn't be able to change, limiting the potential of our voices.
The respiratory, laryngeal, and supraglottic systems control your voice.
This fact is important because it teaches you all the different and important pieces that fit together in order to make up you talking and singing voice.
After studying this topic, we learned a lot of things that are very important about your vocal folds. This information is important because knowing how your vocal fold work can help you to improve your voice and protect it. Overall, we learned how important our vocal folds are and how complicated and important the whole process of how they work is.
