Transcript of DELIRIUM

by Lauren Oliver delirium Plot In a futuristic North America love is said to be a disease, a potentially fatal one. Then a cure was found, and the government demanded that everyone must receive it once turning 18. Many obliged but some rebelled and tried to escape to the wild. These people being a potential threat to their "perfect" system were bombed and eliminated. Many years on there were legends of people still alive living in the wilds called invalids. These people are feared as they potentially carry the disease, Amor Deliria Nervosa. MADE BY JESSICA MUSPRATT When you receive the cure you are left with three dots in a three point star formation on the back of your neck. The cure can only be given to people above the age of 18, any younger and it can potentially be fatal, or leave you with serious brain damage.
It has been 65 years since the cure was invented. They teach Romeo and Juliet
in schools and use it as an
example as why delirium is so
deadly and why it should be feared. Marriage The society in Delirium is very much single sex. Girls and Boys rarely talk or socialize with each other. The only contact girls and boys have is when you meet the person you are to marry and at university, but by them almost everyone is cured. When children finish high school they go for an examination where a table of people ask you questions about yourself, like your favorite colour, your favorite story ect. You are then given a score out of ten and send a list of 4 or 5 people who are most compatible to you, based on your score and background. From this you rate them 1- 5 with one being your first choice and so on. Schools are single sex, and in the afternoon boys play with boys and vise. This is due to the possible threat of catching deliria. You go through the normal school system but in history you are taught about the cure being invented and about love destroying peoples life's in the past. Themes LOVE

Love is a major part of this book. Without it the book wouldn't have a story. In this book people live without love, therefore living with out happiness and passion which are both needed to make a society run. After all if none of us were happy or passionate about our work and lives, we would be where we are today in society. Independence

In delirium the government is extremely controlling, they must know who you are, where your going and with at all times in order to keep a controlled society. They limit what you read, listen to watch and essentially what you think about the world. They chose almost everything for you, your career, husband number of children. The people in this society may not think it but they are extremely dependent on the government for pretty much everything. Control = Power

The Delirium Government controls pretty much everything you do. By doing this they can keep an organized and peaceful society in which they rule over. This is mainly achieved by forcing people and making them believe that love is a disease and by stripping them of their emotions. Personally i think that the main reason for the cure is in fact control and love is just a cover up, which them ties into propaganda. Author Born: 1982 in Westchester, New York Started Writing due to her love of reading. If she read a book she loved she would write sequels Written 7 books: The Delirium Trilogy, Hana; a delirium short story, Before I Fall and 2 childrens books. Thoughts I thought that delirium was very imaginative and captivating story. Though at some points tad bit slow, due to the descriptions, other than that it flowed really well, and kept you intrigued with the information about the foreign world and all the little twists and turns. At the beginning of each chapter it had exerts form 'the book of shhh' which gave extra information into the world and were really interesting. I really liked the way she added the romance as it didn't shadow the story it just helped it flow, I also liked how Lena and Alex meet numerous times and had long conversations before the romance began.
I would recommend this book for teens and up, mostly women but some men may enjoy it. The story follows a young girl named Magdalena 'Lena'. She is all for the cure thinking a life without love is a life without pain; happy, predictable and safe, but with 95 days to go till her procedure she does something that she never though possible, she falls in love. Lena is the protagonist of the story. She is 17 years old almost 18
She has a very stubborn and determined nature.
Lena is a big believer of the cure and cannot wait to receive it, having experienced first hand the dangers of Deliria. Her mum committed suicide to be with her father and her sister caught deliria but was cured of it. This of course all changes when she falls in love. She has light brown, medium length hair.
Her best friend is Hana, whom she has known since primary. Magdelina 'Lena' Haloway Alex Sheaths Alex is a 19 year old boy, he is smart, funny, a bit cocky at times and friendly. He is already at university. He works part time as a security guard. He is describe as have golden brown hair that look like autumn leaves and amber eyes. Hana Hana is Lena's bestfriend, they do everything together. Unlike Lena Hana grew up in the more expensive part of town and is one of the people who own a car or a computer. It is through these thing that Hana finds a world of restricted music and books and she is facinated by it. Though if it really came down to it she would never rebel against the system.
She has blonde hair. The Government They control who you marry
They pick your career for you based on your school grades
Limit what music you listen to and what books you read.
It is mandatory for all to read the book of Shhh.... which explains all about the dangers of love and how to spot it.
The government also do random raids in houses where they come and check that everyone one is home and check for id's and such.
All who have not been cured have a curfew of 8pm. If anyone is caught breaking this they can be sent to jail. Mama, Mama, help me get home
I'm out in the woods, I am out on my own.
I found me a werewolf, a nasty old mutt
It showed me its teeth and went straight for my gut.
Mama, Mama, help me get home
I'm out in the woods, I am out on my own.
I was stopped by a vampire, a rotting old wreck
It showed me its teeth and went straight for my neck.
Mama, Mama, put me to bed
I won't make it home, I'm already half-dead.
I met an Invalid, and fell for his art
He showed me his smile, and went straight for my heart. -From "A Child's Walk Home," Nursery Rhymes and Folk Tales Quotes “Love: a single word, a wispy thing, a word no bigger or longer than an edge. That's what it is: an edge; a razor. It draws up through the center of your life, cutting everything in two. Before and after. The rest of the world falls away on either side.” I love you. Remember. They cannot take it
-Lena They say that the cure for love will make me happy and safe forever. And I've always believed them...
Until now, Now everything has changed.
Now I'd rather be infected with love of the tiniest silver of a second than live a hundred years sufforcated by a lie. Schooling
