Walter Winchell: The Real Man Walter was born in New York City.
He quit school after the sixth grade.
Winchell was most popular during the prohibition era. He had two 15 minute radio shows the time.
He coined more than 15 phrases during his lifetime of radio broadcast. Fast Facts:
Winchell started writing posts on the bulletin backstage after his many acting preformances. This how his writing career began. {Gangsta Winchell} Bio:
Born: April 7,1897 in New York City
Died: February 20, 1972 {age 72}.
Occupation: radio and newspaper columnist and commentator.
A.K.A: The inventor of the gossip column. MORE FACTS: THIS WAY His good friend was Owney Madden, one of the most famous NY Gangsters.
Winchell's gossip columns were sydicated in over 2,000 newspapers and his radio shows were lisened by over 1 million people.
Walter was Jewish, and commonly shared his opinions of Adolf Hitler with his listeners and veiwers.
He coined the phrase: "America- love it or leave it"
Winchell aslo was one of the first Americans to accuse certain organizans to be run by Communist.
Winchell was commonly noted as responding to criticism for betraying confidences by saying, " I know-- I'm just a son of a B****."
Was inducted intot he radio hall of fame in 2004. :) Winchell's Veiws:
Winchell used blackmail to get his information. His eventual downfall was due to the misuse of blackmailing. Walter used his influence to promote FDR's presidential campaign. He was anti-communist, and he played a major role in the Red Scare. Winchell was Jewish and had very strong veiws on WWII and Adolf Hitler. With the power that Walter possesed he could make or break a social light, actor, movie, book, broadway show, or any music. Words coined by WW:
