The learner will be doing curriculum integrated activities using Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 2nd Grade
Butterfly Metamorphosis Discuss the changes the butterfly goes through and introduce the word metamorphosis - a change in form from one stage to the next in a life .
Have the students clap the number of syllables and pronounce the word several times. Watch butterfly life cycle on Brainpopjr. Day 2 During 1 hour computer lab time create/print butterfly life cycle and label each stage in Draw About It on Brainpopjr.

Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar Students complete word search on Word Magnet during 30 minute computer lab time. Standard: RIT.2.4 - Determine the meaning of words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. Standard: S&L.2.2 - Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. Review the word metamorphosis and the stages for a butterfly using the class butterfly life cycle poster. Standard: L.2.7 - Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of it's characters, setting, or plot. Standard: S&L.2.3. - Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue. Standard: 2.L.1.1 - Summarize the life cycle of animals. Take easy online quiz on Brainpopjr, write answers on paper (1 - 5). DAY 2 (CONT'D) During 30 minute computer lab time students will log on and go to Wordle.com and create/print a Wordle using the days of the week and share with the class. Day 3 Review the days of the week. Students recount the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Students are then grouped in pairs, brainstorm and fill in the sheet of what they think The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate each day to get big and fat. Teacher helps as needed and reviews the completed brainstorm sheet with each pair. After the teacher reviews the brainstorm sheet of each pair for what The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate, the pair can go to Write About It on Brainpopjr and fill in their story of what The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate. Print and share. Day 4 Teacher check out laptops from the computer lab. Standard: 2.TT.1.3 - Use technology tools to present data and information. Standard: W.2.6 - With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers. Standard: W.2.5 - With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.
