Types of Poetry Sound Devices Figurative language Elements of Poetry Graphic Elements Is language that is used imaginatively, rather than literally, to express ideas or feelings in new ways. Figures of speech :) Imagery :p Rhythm The pattern created by stressed and unstressed syllables of words in sequence. Rhyme The repetition of identical sounds in the last syllables of words. Consonance Punctuation Line Length Word Position Can help determine whether a poem has a flowing sound or a short, choppy sound. Can show relationships between words and ideas Narrative Ballad Dramatic Lyric Haiku Tanka Sonnet Poetry tells a story with a plot, characters, and a setting. Is a song-like narrative with stanzas and refrain. Poetry tells a story using a characters own thoughts or spoken statement. Poems express the feelings of a single speaker. Is a verse from with three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Is a verse from with five unrhymed lines of five, seven, five, seven, and seven syllables. Is a fourteen-line lyric poem with formal patterns of rhyme, rhythem, and line structure.
