Ottoman Empire
S: Devshirme:Balkan Christians) send boys to become janissaries
P: Gunpowder empire. Suleiman expanded, reformed it. Later sultans just rituals; bureaucracy led (LIKE JAPAN)
I: GUNPOWDER
C: Saw itself as protector of Islam. But tolerated other religions; churches = autonomy
E: Encouraged handicrafts, trade
MING DYNASTY
S: Confucian structure- patriarchal, meritocracy
P: Zheng He exploration (stopped by Confucians), tribute system. POWERFUL.
I: silk, tea. Works on Great Wall (Yuan memories)
C: Xenophobia- can't convert to Christianity
E: Trade w/ Europe- China wants silver, Europeans want EVERYTHING (obsession)
S: Mixed populations, ethnic hierarchy, slaves. Patriarchy. Feudal…?
P: Spanish colonized Americas, Portuguese colonized Brazil. Home governments very involved in colonies. Only whites in government.
I: Columbian exchange, diseases, migration. CASH CROPS, mining
C: missionaries brought CATHOLICISM (like Bartholomew de las Casas, tried to help natives), European culture; but syncretism with native culture
E: Encomiendas: king gives peninsulares land & natives; they can farm but must Christianize, help natives.
Haciendas: basically just feudalism/slavery/serfdom. Farmed cash crops, mined silver/gold.
