First Three Living Things Sent Into Space By: David Ruiz Fruit Flies Fruit Flies were sent up into space in 1947 by the US. Laika The Dog The first living thing to actually complete an orbit was a dog named Laika it was sent up by the USSR in 1957. She died only a few hours later in space due to overheating and panicking The first living thing to complete an orbit and return alive were to dogs named Belka and Strelka they were sent up by the USSR in 1960 they lasted a day up in space then there shuttle was brought down with them alive.
