6. A look into the Future
1. What is Smart Home ?

The term smart home describes houses, whose equipment is connected together and thus offers their users new features and services:

1. Superior Energy Saving
2. Inspiring Comfort
3. Greater Security

The efficient use of energy
homes can autonomously respond to energy prices
as inexpensive as possible
Safety
with the help of sensors and software
automatic system for windows, shutters and lights
deter housebreaker
transfer of video recording on the smartphone

3. Home Automation

common platform for smart homes is missing
communication over wireless networks or cable connections
central control unit in the house

Building Automation Systems (BAS)
A computerized, intelligent network of electronic devices designed to monitor and control the mechanical, electronic, and lighting systems in a building.

Home Automation Systems (HAS)
Home automation is the use of one or more computers to control basic home functions and features automatically and sometimes remotely. An automated home is sometimes called a smart home .
3.1 ZigBee

specification for high level communication and wireless networks
based on an IEEE 802.15 standard
WPAN with small, low-power digital radios
standardized in 2003
standard developed by ZigBee Alliance
ZigBee Alliance founded in 2002
association of more than 230 companies
first ZigBee products in early 2005

Basic Principles

Low cost
very low power consumption
wireless communications standard - built on top of IEEE 802.15.4
Standard Profile

Home Automation:
lighting
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)
window shades
security

Smart Energy:
metering
pricing and demand response
load control applications

1. Gateway
2. Devices
3. App/ Remote Controller

4. Smart Home and Standards

electrical and IT applications still isolated and not communicative
intelligent home networking already possible today
too many different standards, lack of uniform standards
differences in the performance
high costs
economic and financial benefits for consumer not always clear

Intelligent home networking shall enable more comfort, safety, energy efficiency and self-determination.

5.1 IEEE

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
headquartered in New York City
standardization of techniques, hardware and software
IEEE SA (IEEE Standards Association)

5.2 Standard IEEE 802.15

specifies wireless personal area network (WPAN) standards

Task Group 1: WPAN / Bluetooth
Task Group 2: Coexistence
Task Group 3: High Rate WPAN
Task Group 4: Low Rate WPAN
-> (ZigBee devices operate under this 802.15.4 Standard)
Task Group 5: mesh networking
Task Group 6: Body Area Networks
Task Group 7: visible light communication
