Early Martyr for the Protestant faith
Convicted of heresy and sentence to burn Tells us when to obey our appetite and when to resist it collectively EXAMPLE Hungry Appetite is acting The story... would crave gratification immediately Hugh Latimer
Also convicted of heresy and burned with Ridley have you wait for an appropriate time Spirit Reason Lacking Spirit! Daedalus and his son Icarus imprioned by king Minos of Crete EVIDENCE Daedalus fashioned wings out of wax and feathers in order to escape "Anyway, Pete and I always said, no tears, nothing like that. It'll our third marriage each and we're independent... He said, if I get killed off, you just go right ahead and don't cry, but get married again, and don't think of me." (95) Overjoyed by his new ability, Icarus did not head his father's warning and flew too close to the sun. The wax melted and Icarus fell into the water below, giving it the name the Icarian Sea. Daedalus warns Icarus not to fly too close to the sun or the sea "...No the same girl. McClellan. McClellan. Run over by a car. Four days ago. I'm not sure. But I think she's dead. The family moved out anyway. I don't know. But I think she's dead." (47) "I've had two children by Caesarian section. No use going through all that agony for a baby. The world must reproduce, you know, the race must go on. Besides, they sometimes look just like you, and that's nice." (96) Icarus Guy Montag imprisoned by king imprisoned by society Before being burned, Latimer shouts these words to Ridley

Restarting society/Return to a state of nature. "And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded fruit every month; And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of nations." pg. 165 Both burned for beliefs
sacrificed lives
created a legacy Citizens have no drive to be wise, just, courageous, or temperant (good thing else he would have been nuked) The text gives hope to the people. "You heave them into the 'parlor' and turn the switch. It's like washing clothes: stuff laungry in and slam the lid." (96) Significance to the text: Beatty says that books do not agree with each other. This is analogous to the differentiation of languages in the Tower of Babel story: the people in the story were not able to agree/converse with each other. Montag has been entrusted by people like Faber to create a better world. The Tower of Babel
Bible Story
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
