The occupancy sensor can
Headcount (how much) and profile (how often
) the use of building infrastructure (e.g. meeting rooms, rest rooms).
Assess efficiency of resource use.
For example in the energy consumption kWh/person/m2 may now have a factual basis, and be calculated on an

The sensor in a network configuration
If the space has multiple entrances every entrance/ exit needs be monitored by a sensor. A sensor network will be necessary
Advanced signal processing to extract direction information
Case No 1:
A person entering the space is sensed. The processed signal that first increases.
Case No 2:
The person exits the space. Now the processed signal first decreases.
Case No 3:
The person first enters the space and then, changes his mind and exits. This pattern which is a combination of the two previous patterns.
Case No 4:
Two people enter the space with a 15 cm distance between them. Note the ellipse to see how the signal changes when the second person follows closely the first, at such a short distance that a signal from the first person is still existing.
Case No 5:
It is the same case with Case No 2.
Case No 6:
It is the same case with the Case No 4 but the distance between people is now much shorter, 5cm, still the processed digital signal can figure out the two persons (note the ellipse)
Click on the two following diagrams and notice where the signal fluctuates based on the body direction.
The first diagram depicts the human movement on two directions (left and right) while the second diagram illustrates a special case where a person enters , then changes his mind and abruptly turns and steps back. The sensor understands this "extreme" situation and will not produce a signal.
