Transcript of AIR POLLUTION

EQ: What causes air pollution
AIR POLLUTION
Local Air quality is influenced by local and global conditions
Q1: What brings pollution from other places to our local skies?
What are the causes of
Air Pollution?
transportation
energy production
smog in LA (that's air pollution!)
what are the types of pollutants we need to be worried about?
Burning stuff puts dust in the air
burning fossil fuels
making electricity
CFCs in refrigeration
What is Acid rain?
NOx
SOx
SOx and NOx
it removes nutrients from the soils that organisms need
How does acid rain impact soil?
Calcium is a nutrient that animals that have shells (eggs or body parts) need
How does acid rain impact plants?
Acid rain does not usually kill trees directly. Instead, it is more likely to weaken the trees by damaging their leaves, limiting the nutrients available to them, or poisoning them with toxic substances slowly released from the soil.
How does acid rain impact animals?
it kills aquatic animals that other animals rely on for food
what would happen to the dragon fly population if the phytoplankon population is decreased?
what would happen to the bald eagle population if the dragon fly population is reduced?
How can we reduce our impacts on the atmosphere?
alternative fuels for cars
cleaning up the smoke before it leaves factories (scrubbers)
Pass Environmental Laws
A law, the Montreal Protocol, that looks to ban the use of OZONE depleting substances Like CFC's

Summary 10 points:
List the two types of Pollutants that come from automobiles and energy production and tell me what they react with to create acid rain.
Taking it a step further
5 Extra credit
points:
Discuss what part of the plant that acid rain damages and look at the following food web and list off the animals whose population would decrease if we removed the grass. Explain why
