The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest.
What is MDG7

The millennium development goal 7 states..... Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
Examples of charities include Water aid, Unicef and Oxfam.

Aim of water aid - to ensure access to improved sanitation, hygiene and safe drinking water for a further 25 million people by 2015.

Access to piped drinking water:
1900 - 2.3 billion
2015 - 4.2 billion

In 2010, 89% of the worlds population, about 6.1 billion people, had access to safe drinking water.
In 2015, 91% of the worlds population is using improved drinking what compared to 76% in 1990.

Worldwide, 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation. The number of people practicing open defecation has fallen by almost half since 1990.

Globally, 147 countries have met the drinking water target, 95 countries have met sanitation target and 77 countries have met both.

Population Growth
World population in 2000 was 6,082,966,429. Population in November 2016 is 7,454,035,920.
European population in 2000 was 728 million it is now 743.1 million.
Asian population in 2000 was 3,682 million it is now 4.427 billion.
African population in 2000 was 784 million it is now 1.216 billion.
North american population in 2000 was 309 million it is now 528.7 million
MDG 7
Some 2.6 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water since 1990, so the target of halving the proportion of people without access to improved sources of water was achieved in 2010 – five years ahead of schedule. However, 663 million people across the world still do not have access to improved drinking water.
