Subject vs. Theme

Theme is what the author has to say about the subject he or she has written about.
Stories can have MORE THAN ONE theme!
BE CAREFUL!!! Don't get too specific with your themes.
"Dwarfs are helpful" is too specific to the "Snow White" story.
Subjects are one or two words (what is the story about?)
Finding meaning
in literature

Theme is not subject!
Subjects are what the author has chosen to write about. Subjects are often expressed in one word or short phrases.
Try this!
What is the subject of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is about:
a beautiful princess
an evil queen
Theme is not plot either.
Plot is the series of events within a story.
running away
Try this!
Using the subject "jealousy" for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", what is the theme?
How do they eventually end up?
How are the jealous characters portrayed?
Before you decide on the theme, take a look at "jealousy" within the story.
What do they do?
Given what we know about the Evil Queen, who was jealous in the story, what is the author trying to tell us about jealousy?
Jealousy is a powerful emotion that can destroy lives.
This is
of the themes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
A theme is a lesson or message about people and/or life that a story reveals.
"life lesson"
Theme is
a discovery about life.
Theme tends to focus on discoveries about the BIG topics or subjects in everyone's life.
BIG subjects,
like what?
understanding the nature of love
accepting responsibility
understanding loss
dealing with ambition
discovering the joys and problems of friendship
Themes aren't specific to the work of literature you're reading but relevant to all of us.
The theme is always a complete sentence. It includes the topic but makes a comment on it.
Courage helps you become the person you can be.
Friendship is important; it gets you through tough times.
Good people are blessed while bad people are punished.
"Being evil will turn you into a witch and you'll fall off a cliff" is too specific to "Snow White".
Themes are sentences (what is the author trying to say about the subject?)
How can you discover the theme of a text?
Find the topic
Then decide what the author is saying about that topic.
Look at what a character learns
Look at symbols
Look at the conflict and how it is resolved
Theme is the life lesson in a story, and it is for the reader and ALL people!
What is the story about?
