What Makes Weather?
Weather is what the atmosphere is like in terms of heat, pressure, wind and humidity.
Above earth, there is no weather.
If earth atmosphere was never mixed, heated or moved, there would be no weather
Heat mixes the atmosphere to make weather.
Meteorology is the study of the Earth's atmosphere and weather.
A person who studies meteorology is called a meteorologists.
Meteorologists can predict the weather.
The most common meteorology tool is the thermometer.
Meteorologists often use special computer programs to predict the weather.
Hurricane Katrina was a very large and powerful hurricane.
It weakened before making landfall at the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi.
Katrina's large size resulted in a large section of the U.S. coastline to feel the results of its high winds, big waves and water rise.
Hurricane Andrew was one of the most destructive storms to ever strike the U.S.
Most of the damage ocurred in Miami-Dade County in southeastern Florida.
The estimated damage total of $26 billion made Andrew the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history up to that time.

A Hurricane is a very powerful storm that develops over the ocean.
They can cause destruction.
They can occur from around June to November.
In the western North Pacific Ocean, these storms are called typhoons.
The winds in a hurricane whip around the eye of the storm.
The in a hurricane is a calm warm area with few winds or clouds.
Thunderstorms are storms that produce lightning, thunder, violent winds, tornadoes and sometimes hail.
A thunderstorm forms when warm, moist air rises from near earths surface. As the air rises, it cools.
This static electricity is discharged as lightning.
Cells are very distinct storm centers.
In some cases, individual storms can form a long line.
What are Tsunamis?
A tsunami is a series of massive waves that may cause great devastation and loss of life when they hit a coast.
Most tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake, but not all underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis.
90% of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean.
What are Earthquakes?
An earthquake is the sometimes violent shaking of the Earth's tectonic plates.
Earthquakes can strike suddenly and violently and occur at any time, day or night, throughout the year.
The violent ground-shaking of earthquakes by itself can cause damage to homes, roads, and bridges; shake products off of shelves, and lead to death and injuries, but earthquakes can also lead to other natural disasters, like tsunamis.

What are Tornadoes?
A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground.
They can destroy large buildings, uproot trees and hurl vehicles hundreds of yards.
Most tornadoes form from thunderstorms.
When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere.
Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical.
Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.
A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth.
Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods.
An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls.
Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.
The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The theory that explains this process is called plate tectonics.
