  • she was born on December 17,1760, in plympton, massachusetts

  • Her father was killed on a shipwreck and her mother was very sick and poor so she could no longer take care of her.
  • At the age 8 to10 year's old she became a servant
  • She also was a reading teacher for a year and she was very good at it.

In 1782 Deborah Sampson decided to participate in the fight for American Independence by joining the constitutional Army . Assuming man's identity, she enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts in May, under the name Robert Shurtleff. Deborah Sampson quickly earned the respect of her commanding officers and fellow soldiers, Who nicknamed her "Molly" because of her beardless features. She fought in many battles, and laterr she developed a fever and was put in the hospital. The Doctor discoverd that "Robert" was actually a woman.He took her to his family's home to get well and she was honorably discharged from the Army, in October 1783.

  • Deborah Sampson wanted to join the army but they did not let women join .So she dressed as man and joined the army .
  • Also in 1782 Deborah Sampson married Benjamin Gannett, a massachusetts farmer,and had three children.
  • Deborah sampson died at 62
