Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's leading sports competition with more than two hundred nations participating. They are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating. The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece and was revived in the late 19th century (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014).

Swimming has featured in the Olympic Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle and breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904 and butterfly in 1956 (Olympic.org, 2014).
Michael Phelps holds the record with the most gold medals won out of all the Olympian athletes, with a total of eighteen gold medals (Usaswimming.org, 2014).
Phelps competed in his first Olympics at the age of 15 as part of the U.S. men's swim team. He went on to win medals at the Olympic Summer Games, accumulating a total of twenty-two medals - eighteen gold, two silver and two bronze. He also set the record for the most medals won by any Olympian athlete (Biography.com, 2014).
In the year 2000, Thorpe competed in his first Olympics as part of the Australian men's swim team. He won a total of nine medals - five gold, three silver and one bronze, the greatest total of any Australian athlete (Biography.com).
Michael Phelps set a total of eight Olympic world records, five individual records and three as part of the U.S relay team (Untitledlondon.com, 2014).
Canadian Ian Millar is famously known in the Equestrian world for having competed in nine Olympics since 2008
(WARD & SNYDER, 2014).
Andrew Hoy has competed in seven Olympic Games since his first appearance in 1984. He has won four medals in total, three gold and one silver in his career (Sel.com.au, 2014).
Polo was the first Equine event to compete in the Olympic Games in 1900. This is one of four sports where men compete against women, and the only sport where animals are used in the competition. There are three events, Dressage, Eventing and Jumping (Cappuccio, 2014).
Kato Sawao from Japan won the most gold medals in Gymnastics between 1968-1976, winning eight gold medals (Olympic.org, 2014).

In 2013, Edith Peluso was awarded a Merit, an Australian Gymnastics Award established in 2011, to highlight Olympic Australian Gymnasts. Edith was awarded the Merit for her outstanding achievements, and her life long career of competing and coaching (Gymnastics.org.au, 2014).
The first Gymnastics event held in the Olympic Games was in Athens 1896. Only men would compete in the sport until 1928 (Corporate.olympics.com.au, 2014).
Nadia Comaneci was the first Olympic gymnast to receive a perfect score of ten (Olympic.org, 2014). The film Nadia was made in 1984, uncovering the commitment and her life story of being a gymnast (Cooke, McGinn, Adams, Alic & Asperger, 2014).
Athletics featured in the first Olympic Games, in 1896. The program includes many track and field events, which consists of a variety of running, Jumping, throwing and walking (Olympic.org, 2014).
Cathy Freeman was the first Indigenous Australian to win a medal in an individual event. In 2000, she was given the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron (Olympic.org, 2014).
Scott Brash (Jumping), Charlotte Dujardin (Dressage) and William Fox-Pitt (Eventing), have broken all-time records in all three Equestrian disciplines (Fei.org, 2014).
Most Gold Medals
Anky Van Grunsven from the Netherlands won the most medals - three gold , two silver and one bronze for competing in the dressage event. Anky won gold at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing in 2008 (Olympics30.com, 2014).
Carl Lewis won four gold medals for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m races. He also won the long jump event in 1984, being undefeated for nearly ten years (Sportige.com, 2014).
Usain Bolt broke three world records at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He also became the first man in history to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m team races in world record times. He made history, when at the 2012 games he defended all three Olympic titles (Create.ph, 2014).
Nicknamed 'the flying finn', Paavo Nurmi dominated long distance running, winning twelve Olympic medals - nine gold and three silver, over three Olympic games (Encyclopedia.com, 2014).

This presentation is a brief look at four major events held at the Olympic Games over the past century, Gymnastics, Swimming, Equestrian and Athletics. During the slides we will view the History, Most Gold Medals won, a Famous Person, an Australian Icon, and a World Record.

The Olympic Games has defined the importance sport plays in humanity, ranging from the history of events, to the most medals awarded, famous icons idolized, and world records achieved.

The Olympics create a sense of community, inviting countries to come together and unite. We see Olympians setting values and principles amongst humankind and witness them celebrating their achievements.

The Games are more than just metres and medals, they are magical moments and memories, for all who witness and partake.
