C(at)alamity Process of creating C(at)alamity What is the purpose of this blog? Blog Design Blog Development Challenges I created this blog as a personal project to share my experience of being a new kittenmom with whomever was interested. (I'm pretty sure my mom was tired of the constant, inane text updates anyway.) http://catalamity.wordpress.com/ I chose Wordpress ( http://wordpress.org/ ) as the blogging tool to host this blog.

It is very user friendly, had many themes to choose from, and was fairly easy to learn. C(at)alamity went live on October 1st, with my first post being about why I adopted my kittens.

I have posted a total of 7 blog posts, between October 1 and November 1, ranging in topics from crazy cat behavior, potty drama and airline policy confusion. The most significant challenge I encountered while creating this blog was attempting to upload images to the posts. The method I used was to take pictures with my phone, email the photo to myself, save the photo, and then upload the photo to the blog. Though not terribly time consuming, it was a very tedious process. The Numbers Blog posts: 7

Followers: 4 Wordpress has a "Stats" page that keeps track of the following information. Literature Connections Proposed Study Web 2.0 technology has had a significant impact on the use and capabilities of of blogs. Specifically, the ease with which a user can create and develop his/her own blog allows millions of internet users the opportunity to create and publish their own works almost instantaneously. Wesch, in "What is Web 2.0? What Does It Mean for Anthropology," describes his own personal experience using a Web 2.0 tool to create and publish a video that went viral within days.

Greenhow, Robelia and Hughes also describe the affordances of Web 2.0 technology in their article "Learning, Teaching and Scholarship in a Digital Age: Web 2.0 and Classroom Research: What Path Should We Take Now?". The authors describe how users can create and share media easily and quickly with peers around the world, and specifically mention blogs as a tool for this sharing and conversation. The authors are specifically interested in how students use the web, and mention findings that students do choose to create and comment in blogs on academic topics in their free time.

Will Richardson (Ashley's Who's Who) is an educator, author and blogger who advocates for the integration of Web 2.0 technology in classrooms, specifically blogs. He explains that blogs allow for "peer collaboration, public or private conversation, reflective online portfolios, and lifelong learning places". In his many articles and blogs he showcases how various teachers across the country are already using blogs either as professionals to share experiences or to learn from other educators, or in their classrooms with their students to encourage discussion and enhance learning. Greenhow, Robelia and Hughes suggest a number of research questions for their peers to investigate in "Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship in a Digital Age". I propose a case study wherein classroom teachers would electively integrate blogging into their course curriculum, either as a whole class or by students individually. Due to the discussion of "The Participation Gap" in the paper "Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Centure", and the discussion of equity and access to Web 2.0 in Greenhow et al's article, I'd like this study to feature classrooms from areas of differing socio-economic statuses.

This study would include a pre-survey, administered to the students prior to the beginning of the course, asking about their use of and exposure to media, and about their knowledge of and interactions with Web 2.0 tools. A similar post-course survey would also be administered at the end of the course.

I would interview the participating teachers prior to the beginning of the course, at least one time during the course and after the completion of the course. I would also observe each teacher at least twice.
