Part 3 History of Printing Ts'ai Lun (god of the papermakers) is linked to the invention of paper Invention of Paper During the T'ang Dynasty, printing was created, with the use of carved wooden blocks. This technology allowed for multiple transfers and copies of text Block Printing The completed invention of paper was eventually passed over to the Arabs in Samarkand 105 650 800 1200 1439 1455 1789 The advancement in printing and mass communication slowly brought upon literacy creating a new breed of scholarly and literary folk Literacy Literacy began to move through Europe Movable type printing is invented... Little advancement is made to the production of paper, and the Arabs pass their knowledge of paper production to Europe (Spain and Italy) where paper slowly became a new phenomenon Paper Globalizes... The Gutenberg printing press is invented Printing Press Lauren, Stephanie, Jill, Celynn, Ariel Tso Po makes advances to his predecessors invention "fancy" and "beautiful" papers This paper was made of: Tree bark, hemp, rags and fish nets The discovery of rag paper in Turkestan showed advancements including: loading and size of paper was adjusted, and traces of glue and gelatin were added creating a stronger paper China This gave an incentive for cheapening the process of producing books! Compensated for the more dominant opposite view, equalizing culture Gutenberg prints a 42 verse bible, known as the Gutenberg Bible Within a century of this invention the calligrapher, the hand-copyist and scribes had been driven out of the field Printing broke the class monopoly and provided the common man with the means of gaining access to the culture of the world... However! Many political leaders saw this advancement as a way to spread their political agenda and propoganda In 1789 the regency of Louis XIII saw the founding of Europe's first royally sponsored newspaper Allowed for individual thinking! Group Activity Martin Luther Wrote his complaints on the Catholic Church. Brought people closer to God by distributing bibles (made easier by the printing press) Throughout history figures have used media advancements to their advantage News As society developed, devices were created to save time and energy This extra time allowed for reading and learning which helped society develop Postal Service Was an early player in distributing the news
